I can’t really think of a more satisfying tv pundit to be “Fredo on the boat”.
Oh, yikes. They started talking about him (or his campaign) in the past tense.
That clip was seriously painful to watch. Ouch.
The Germans have a word for it, “Fremdschamen,” meaning the painful feeling when you are vicarious embarassed by someone else’s embarassment. I felt that there for Mitt Romney. Wow.
That’s about on par with the Dean Scream. Sorry, I think Mittens should be bitch slapped and sent packing, but mao on a pogo stick but that’s just a shitty little sound bite that’s about as clear as mud. There are plenty of other things to nail in the coffin but this seems pretty pathetic. YMMV
Yes, "peaking too early" is an inappropriate analogy from sporting tournaments where you have discrete knock-out rounds. Politics is more like golf where leads from early rounds carry over to the last round. A golfer who is ten shots ahead entering the final round doesn't worry about "peaking too early" and wonder if he would be better off if he were just 3 shots ahead.
There are all sorts of advantages to having an early lead. With early voting, you can start banking in the votes. A lot of business money flows to the side which is perceived to be winning. The other side will be demoralized; why volunteer and raise money for a likely loser? There is a reason why Republicans are desperately trying to argue that the polls are wrong.
Take another look at the chart. The Great Depression is the black dotted line. In parentheses is the phrase (10 years). We hit rock bottom in March 1933 when FDR took office: that was only 3 1/2 years in. Recovery started immediately, but we regained full employment only during WWII.
The fact is, we know now how to get rid of recessions caused by a shortfall of demand. The problem is that the Republicans have discovered that a strong economy is not in the minority party’s interest. So they filibuster and obstruct. They even tried to stop Obama from extending the payroll tax cut, before they finally caved. But they will do nothing to address the nation’s infrastructure deficit.
We do not know how to get rid of recessions caused by a shortfall of demand. If we did, then Europe, which last I checked does not have many small government zealots, would have already fixed their problems. There would also be a clear advantage in economic growth between countries that did stimulus and those that did not.
Just wanted to point out that Realclearpolitics has moved Ohio into the “leans Obama” category. All the other states in this category are sure to go to Obama, so it looks extremely likely that he’s got it in the bag.
On this date in 2008, McCain had a slight lead in the polls in Ohio.
The Germans are annoyed at the allegedly spendthrift Greeks and Spanish, and are therefore advocating austerity. The Italians and the Spanish can’t run up large deficits, because they are constrained by the bond market and the fact that they don’t control their own currency. adaher: you clearly do not know of what you speak.
Cite: Today’s news! Wednesday, the streets of Madrid were full of protesters for the second day, thousands of whom surrounded Parliament, angry at the budget cutting by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s government; the leader of the economically powerful Catalonia region called for a referendum to consider leaving the country, showing that austerity threatened the nation’s unity. …
Greece was shut down Wednesday by a general strike, with an estimated 60,000 people marching on the Greek Parliament in Athens as Prime Minister Antonis Samaras attempted to navigate the demands of international lenders for more forceful austerity measures and the pleas of a populace experiencing 24 percent unemployment. http://seattletimes.com/html/nationworld/2019270843_eurocrise27.html
However, many nations in the EU can do stimulus, and many have. Yet they have no performed better than those that did not. Greece and Spain excepted of course, because they have problems that would prevent them from doing stimulus in any case.
True, but like the Dean “scream”, it goes to the narrative. In Dean’s case, that the man wasn’t all there; in Romney’s, that he’s an out-of-touch egoist.
I think Scarborough had it summed up pretty well. All you can do is shake your head (or in Joe’s case, cover your face) and wonder what else this bozo can do to shoot himself in the foot. The trouble is that all his gaffes just confirm what we thought we knew about Romney. We thought he was a condescending little prick with contempt for the poor, and what do you know the 47% clip proves that he indeed is. We thought he was a clueless awkward dork and son of a gun the “Romney…Ryan…Romney…Ryan” chant goes ahead and proves us right. We thought he was a soulless flip-flopper and he either contradicts himself within minutes of making a statement or his staff puts out a presser saying he didn’t really say what we just heard. This guy makes Dukakis and Mondale look like Bill Clinton. Yes, it is over. He lost. He’s not going to get 200 electoral votes. Time for him to file his amended return to recoup the deductions he passed on, take his mommy jeans to Goodwill and get the donation receipt, and scrub that Boehner orange paint off his face.
When Newt scornfully gives you campaign advice, you know you’re in trouble: http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2012/09/26/gingrich-hits-romney-in-frank-assessment/
The gaffes are a non issue. Obama has made repeated gaffes over the last couple of months and it’s just been waved away as insignificant. Those same gaffes would cause the media to question a Republican’s suitability for office.
Imagine if Romney had:
- Not known how much the national debt was
- Thought the Libya attack was a spontaneous response to a movie.
- Not known whether Egypt is an ally or not
None of those were “gaffes”, except in the No Spin Zone.
-
It changes constantly. Knowing the precise amount at any moment in time is a bit of trivia that serves no useful purpose.
-
Obama didn’t dance on the warm corpse like Romney did. Rather than immediately assign blame for the incident, he let the investigation take its course. What’s the fucking hurry?
-
Egypt has a new government. As yet, we don’t know how friendly they will be to the US. When Middle Eastern dictators are deposed, we don’t always get an ally as the result, as we saw when the Shah was deposed in Iran.
Most informed watchers took that as a deliberate message to Egypt about not taking our foreign aid dollars for granted without some quid pro quo. It was not a gaffe.
But the fact that adaher is equating these statements to Governor Momjean’s colossal set-your-dick-on-fire-and-then-stomp-it-out-with-both-feet gaffes, anad attributing the difference in popular response to an attack by the lamestream media is very telling.
Aye, I saw where the entire GOP waved it away as insignificant by devoting a whole weeklong convention to one of Obama’s “gaffes”.
