I seem to remember reading somewhere that an adult healthy hyena could bite through a certain amount of steel (I’m assuming a thin sheet). My question is: Is this true or false, if true how did someone discover this, and where do hyenas rank as far as jaw strength?
Yes it is true.
Additionally, if you give me a thin enough sheet, I can bite through a certain amount of steel.
Russell
I can do it with my erect penis if it is the correct gauge ( I mean the steel. My penis can be any gauge I want it to be. I have a very versatile penis.)
Apparently, they can generate a bite force up to 450 kg. That would probably do more damage than sailor’s dick, even if sailor was able to balance himself on its tip.
I’d say the steel-biting thing is hokum.
There are sites out there that claim the jaguar has strong jaws and can bite through the shell of a turtle – but is this proven?
While this page claims the wind spider, for its size, holds the crown title for jaw strength.
So, sailor, your penis has teeth? That conjures up disturbing images of an adult Steve Oedekerk movie…
Once you get down to insect size having the strongest anything relative to wieght is rather common.
Hyaenas routinely crush and eat bones, even large ones like the femur, humerus and tibia. Most predators will eat bones, but usually they are only able to crack the softer ones…ribs, tail, spine, foot bones, and parts of the skull. Hyaenas get everything. Hyaena poop is often bone white from all the excreted calcium. Hyaenas digest the protein from the bone and excrete the minerals. Bones contain a surprising amount of protein, which humans can access by making soup from the bones. You can also demonstrate this by soaking a chicken leg bone in vinegar for a few days…the minerals will be removed and the bone is as floppy as rubber.
Hyaenas will also routinely eat lion feces. Cats have very short digestive systems, and their feces contains a lot of available food value. My dog would do the same thing, sneaking into the cats litter box and munching the cat turds.
Hyaenas have the strongest jaws of any extant mammal. But as others have stated “biting through steel” is a pretty meaningless ability unless you specify how much steel they are biting through.
I can bite through a sheet of steel slightly thicker than what RussellM can chomp, and I can do it with one tooth tied behind my back.
