I was told that "the hoi polloi is redundant. I don’t know Greek, so can’t confirm.

“Mardi Gras Day” is useful when you are making a distinction between Fat Tuesday itself and “Mardi Gras Time” which includes the preceding couple of weeks, AKA Carnival.
Ex: “The Superbowl has royally f-ed up Mardi Gras, but Mardi Gras Day should still be fun”.
“Hoi” means “the,” so, in that sense “the hoi polloi” is redundant. Dropping “hoi,” though, loses the euphony of the phrase, so I’m fine with it.
