Everybody lies. You, me, them, your priest, your father, your wife.
People compartiment their lives, and lies. Being unfaithful to your wife doesn’t mean you automatically are going to be unfaithful to your voters. It’s not a “canard”, it’s just a fact.
Every public person WILL lie about having an affair - there is simply no way owning up to an affair will help their career and image. OTOH, there is a direct incentive to fulfil campaign promises, implement solutions that work instead of “let’s not and say we did” etc…
People, even public figures, have an absolute right to privacy. That right include lying through your teeth to nosy fuckers who should mind their own bedroom.
A senator, congressman, president, god who has an affair is not screwing his constituents over.
I just did. It’s not a “canard”. It’s the truth. A canard is a deliberate hoax. This is not a hoax : People lie. People are not perfect. Not even politicians (;)). “Morals” have nothing to do with their ability to do their job well, or to be trustworthy to the public. A person with “a strong moral compulsion not to lie” does not exist. Thinking with you dick some of the time does not make you a horrible person.

His career as an elected official is over. But, he does have good talent as a lawyer.
He chose to go down to Haiti now to do some good, and I don’t see any big fuss of press coverage with that now: it may be that in desperation of wanting to do something worthwhile, he chose that, as it’s a great place of need. It does say something to me about where his heart is. He could just as easily stay in his beach house away from his family and ride it out, no problem with money. But, he went to Haiti, to try to do some good, by his own words.
We’ll see how it plays out, and if it is crocodile tears, but, what if not? If it is at his lowest hour, and he chose to try to do some good where needed most, I see it as being a decent start at rebuilding a life with good potential to help others.
I purposely did not read any of the replies, because I wanted my response to the OP to be my own, which means “not influenced by others”.
Any politician who thinks with his/her dick or pussy is of no use to me or the country which adopted me.
And I wrote that to write this: What they do outside of their home is their business!
But… when it interferes with the running of government?

If Edwards had been elected President for instance, and he’d been fucking some aide in a motel somewhere while terrorists were attacking us again? Yeah, kick his ass out, and quick!
Anyone who takes on the cloak of leading our country had better damn well keep that in mind.
And, of course, if you want the workings of your dick to not be part of your public persona than perhaps we can finally do away with trotting out your family as part of your campaign, all the photo ops, in all your literature.
If you included the, ‘look I’m a good family man’, routine in your spin you’ve earned at least a little scorn when it proves to not be the pretty picture you implied.
John Edwards was also fond of trading on sympathy for losing a young son to an auto accident when he thought it would serve his cause…
I always felt a bit sorry of Elizabeth Edwards, but she is apparently a shrew of the highest caliber, according to several who know her.
The eldest daughter (Kate?) however always seemed to conduct herself with poise and grace, and obviously has been thru a lot, (losing a little brother, mom with cancer and dad’s ego-driven jackassery) and I dont recall her getting herself arrested like John Kerry’s daughter or Al Gore jr.
(and if anyone cares, I voted for both Kerry and Gore)
No longer a politican when? He was lying about this during much of his campaign, and even after he dropped out, he was still vying for a spot in the Obama adminsitration.
It fucking better be over! That silly son of a bitch knew he had a huge scandal bubbling right under his feet, and kept on trying to be the nominee. And I supported him! Thinking for one thing I really really didn’t want to have to vote for Hillary. Would if I had to, but yeeeech! I also thought Obama couldn’t win, so I was betting the main chance, which was Pretty Johnny.
And the fucking asshole knew, knew all along that he had a bomb under his ass set to blow him right out the water! He might have delivered our country into the hands of McCain/Palin.
I’m a pretty forgiving person, over all. But that totally tears it. Begone, sir. A life of good works and penance seems most appropriate.
It was dumb, for sure. The hubris in thinking it would never get revealed is breathtaking. For Christ’s sake, you’d think he’d at least have enough sense to wear a balloon, if nothing else.
I distinctly remember, though, that you said you smelled something fishy (or something like that) about Edwards. I did, too, and so did a few others.
Great minds… well, you know the rest.
This is why his political career is over. You can recover from an affair, but not from doing something that would have destroyed a presidential campaign for your party.
That doesn’t mean the story isn’t newsworthy. It’s not like this happened a long time ago. We’re talking about a presidential candidate in our last presidential election-cycle. A candidate whose campaign image included a loving, dying wife. This guy had an extra-martial affair by which he fathered a child out of wedlock all while running for president. And there are accusations that he used campaign money to patch leaks. I don’t know what plays for news where you’re from but damn, down here that’s news man! If it came out that McCain really was doing that lobbyist in the bakc of the Straight Talk Express, I promise you we’d hear about it.
