IS life a curse?

Why exactly is that? I think most people dress up their lives to create the illusion that it’s more than just simple processes.

I think the better question is to why bother and what’s the point? The reason we engage in such things is because we have woven them into such grand actions, we dress up the chemical of love as mystical power and helping others as some kind of noble act of justice for which we should be rewarded. That’s what keeps us doing the song and dance. When the illusiknis dispelled what reason is there to carry on such acts? Is it better to just retreat back into the illusion we crafted?

OK.

I guess it really depends on whether you find life mostly painful or mostly enjoyable. I find it mainly annoying.

Hope springs eternal. Some/most people live in the hope that while life may not be so great right now, it’s worth sticking around until it gets better.

And who ever told you that life is a bowl of cherries anyway? Did someone promise you a rose garden? For a guy who is so determined to believe that "life is a curse"why are you so single mindedly focused on getting to the ANSWER of why life is worth living?

If you’ve decided that life is nothing but misery, why do you keep wanting to be convinced otherwise? Perhaps you lack the courage of your convictions, or, perhaps you’re not so certain of your convictions after all.

You’re asking random strangers on the Internet for answers to questions that only exist within you. No one can answer them for you, you must answer for yourself. Once you do you will find that your answer is shared by others, you can then join them with them for companionship.

If you need help, there are 2 types of qualified professionals, whom you pay per session for their time and expertise, that may guide you to your answer - psychologists and prostitutes. Try one or try both as you seek your enlightenment.

I come here because I haven’t found and answer and/or am unable to answer

Because my head needs a reason to do things and finding out why we bother to keep on living is one thing. Simple surivival instinct isn’t good enough. That just proves we are trapped in a universe full of suffering with only brief respites of pleasure.

I think Erma Bombeck said it well: “The grass is always greener over the septic tank.”

What sucks is that life as we know it is the end result of three hundred years of scientific, technological, medicinal, social and cultural evolution (I do not believe agricultural society advanced much up until the industrial revolution).

And life still isn’t that great a lot of the time for a lot of people.

Is life a curse? Not for everyone, no. For people with terrible genetics, terrible backgrounds, terrible luck, etc. yes life is a curse. Not everyone has had those issues though.

We just keep pushing for a better life though. More medicine, more science, more technology, more justice, more fairness, etc.

But if you compare the life of even an extremely poor person today to the life of an average person of three hundred years ago, the person today is much better off. Life expectancy has improved tremendously, especially for children. Improved nutrition has extended life.

People, including the OP, may think life sucks. But it’s better now than in the past. And life is better than the alternative.

But if you ask people going through such difficult times, they’re not necessarily (or even often) suicidal.

I was listening to a podcast recently, that mentioned the topic of how people who are disabled are depicted in film and TV. Many people with disabilities are offended by their depiction, because often they’re shown to be pathetic; struggling with the most mundane tasks, and unhappy or bitter.
The reality is that we all get used to our limitations and get on with life. That’s not to say people don’t go through significant difficulties. But what I’m saying is you can’t look at someone whose life is hard and assume they are less happy than you are.

Yep, and that’s one thing which is definitely worth living for IMO (if there were not many other reasons). The world is changing very quickly now, which is exciting in itself and also may mean your life could be radically different in a decade say. Don’t you at least want to see?

Art, entertainment and comedy elevate us beyond mere animals IMHO.

What is this “we” pale-face? I have no such need. Living to me is an autonomic response. It’s like breathing air. Living is all there is. What happens while you’re living and what motivates people to keep doing it is an entirely personal thing. Don’t expect others to provide you with the answer. But since you are alive, you really have only one job and that’s to figure out what’s in it for you. I understand that for some that’s a more difficult question to answer than for others. But as long as you’re alive, that’s your duty.

Hate the job? Don’t want it anymore? Well, there’s really only one alternative and sooner or later we all end up permanently retiring to oblivion. So unless you’re in a big rush to shake off this mortal coil, I suggest you get back to work.

I’ll ask you one more time - Who promised you a rose garden?

Life is better now than in the past. A poor person today has options and healthcare that a rich person couldn’t obtain 200 years ago. My point is that due to the hedonistic treadmill we get used to it, and take it for granted. It stinks. We do not get to rest on our laurels, we keep moving forward.

I guess in a way it is good, if we ever got truly content we’d stop evolving our societies, medicine, science and technology.

Nah. Life’s actually pretty awesome, as long as you’ve got a roof over your head, reliable source of food/clean water, sanitation, and non-abusive family.
I’d certainly take having a life over not having a life.

Three hundred years ago, life, for most people, was just a treadmill to keep alive. Most people lost most of their children in infancy and pregnant women often died in childbirth. People got terrible illnesses, some of which can be treated quite easily today.

People who think life stinks have no idea how much worse it was in the past, and for those fortunate enough to be able to be posting here, how much better off they are than most of the people in the world today.

But what about meaning and wondering why you continue to go on when life gets hard?

People keep answering that question, and you keep ignoring them.

It’s up to you to find meaning in your life. For some people, it’s in the children they raise. For others, it’s in the art they create. Some people find their work to be meaningful.
