is mary jane REALLY bad for you?

i’ve just been wondering how bad pot really is for you. in my opinion its really not so bad, yeah its not the BEST thing for you but hey…its pretty freaking awsum  like yea you might have a bit of a problem with the whole memory thing…but shit that happens to people all the time. its awsum when your upset about sumthing absolutely rediculous and pot just makes that go away and its not likea fake happy…cuz your continually happy for the rest of your time…unlike something such as herione or crack where there is an extremely horrible come down[or so i’ve heard, read…i have no personal experience with either of these substances]…so basically wat i’m trying to get it at is…just how bad is marijuana?

How did I know that this was posted by a non-member even before I clicked on the title? Yes, inhaling the smoke of burning organic compounds is very bad for you. Depending on whom you ask, perhaps as many as 30% of all internal human carcinomas are caused by polynuclear and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. I could go on all night, but I’m taking my mom out for dinner and have to hop in the shower. I’m sure others will follow shortly to chime in.

Marijuana does horrible things to a person’s grammar skills. Want some Funions?

Actually, compared to some others, she doesn’t seem to bring Spidey that much trouble.

Not sure, but it’s certainly less dangerous and addictive than tobacco or alcohol.

Gwen was much better for him, but she got killed. There’s a lesson in there.

People still call it Mary-Jane?

That’s, like, so 30 years ago.

What are the chances we actually get a real answer in this thread? Just because the OP is a Guest and has some spelling and grammar errors doesn’t mean it’s not a decent question.

Here is a start.

I’m curious about lung cancer myself, as I’ve heard conflicting things. It’d be nice to get an accurate portrayal of the heath risks of smoking pot, but they don’t do much research on it.

We did get a real answer. Breathing in smoke is not good for you. One must admit that few people smoke marijuana as heavily as tobacco, but still not much good can come of it.

While some compounds in marijuana have useful effects, these are generally more easily ingested in tablet form.

Further, smoking marijuana has psychological effects which are easy to observe but hard to quantify. These would seem to include lethargy and apathy.

So is marijuana bad for you? Sure. Worse than other things? Some yes, some no.

Well we’ve had a limited answer. The OP doesn’t specify smoking it. I hear baking it in muffins has the same effect, if slower.

The issue is topical in Oz because there is currently an expensive looking TV advertising campaign against dope use running here at the moment. What stands out like dog’s balls is the way it is carefully spun to make it sound like dope is very bad for you while making notably few positive strong statements that it actually is.

So I’m curious concerning the OP too: leaving aside the smoking danger, is there solid research confirming long term negative effects of THC ingestion?

I’ve always wondered why buying alcohol is legal. I know people that can easily drive (some say they drive better!?) while high on the ‘J’. As for a drunk person behind the wheel? If anything, I wonder what would happen if they made alcoholic beverages illegal and made pot legal ?

Because prohibition doesn’t work. It didn’t work for alcohol, and it’s not working now for pot. Besides, banning a substance because it makes some people risky in certain situations is no reason to ban it at all. You must leave some personal responsibility to the individual, but too often the government sees its goal to be our babysitter.

Easy. Frito-Lay stock would go through the roof.

Smoking marijuana is bad for you period (the smoke in the lungs part).

The psycho-active ingredient in pot (THC) as drugs go is actually fairly harmless. You get stoned of course but IIRC as far as “poisoning” your body goes it is rather mild. I seem to recall that aspirin is harder on your body. Alcohol certainly is.

That said there is a lot of other crud in pot besides the THC. I am not sure what effects they may have on your body (they do not get you stoned…just mean getting rid of it).

Pot is also not physically addictive which is a rather large thing in the plus column for it.

Ideally there’d be THC pills making all the other stuff a non-issue.

Bad for you?

That’s crazy, I’ve been smoking it all my life and … uh, what was the question again?

Sure, they SAY that, but consider the condition of the observer at the time.

Unless someone can provide neutral studies comparing performances while under the influence of one drug or the other, analyzed by someone not participating as a subject, such observations are worthless.

Why does the “drunk test” on WKRP between Venus and The Doctor come to mind?

Aldiboronti, here – have some of these yummy Fritos…

As far as the smoke in the lungs goes, I don’t think you can call it bad for you if its true as I have read that there are no cases of a pot only smoker getting lung cancer.

So you’re saying if I smoke marijuana I will never get lung cancer?

Not from the marihuana, according to this. Or you would be the first.

I don’t take drugs myself, but clearly tobacco is far worse (more addictive + deadly) and alcohol needs to be treated very carefully.

There are also social implications. It would be stupid to lose your job by being stoned, or to drive while unfit, or to get thrown out of school.

Mary-Janes are pretty bad for your teeth and the primary ingrediant is sugar. You won’t make friends with your dentist if you have a bad mary-jane habit.
