Is Mega a viable site for backing up my data?

It’s mainly pictures and videos. I’ve heard that Kim Dotcom’s site Mega offers 50 GB of data free for anyone who registers. That’s a lot of space.

I know that megaupload and a lot of his sites were famous for being storage sites for pirated movies and games, but is Mega a good site for backing up your personal data?

If not, what is the best site that offers a lot of storage space? I’ve filled my Dropbox and Skydrive.

Thanks!

If you need more space, and having the files in the future is important to you, you need to pay for storage services from a reputable site. Mega is not a reputable site - it’s an obvious scheme to avoid copyright law. It may or may not survive legal attack.

Dropbox has a good reputation. I would purchase service from them.

A lot of people used Kim Dotcom’s Megaupload site as backup: the government seized the site and those people lost all their backup files.

So Mega is better than nothing, but if you absolutely need backup you can’t rely on Mega.

I use Mega (paid account), but it’s slow and clumsy. I also use DropBox, which is better and smarter, and I use OSX’s time machine to backup everything on an external hard drive. I should really be using iCloud, though, since everything syncs automatically and it’s easy.

So it may work as a backup-plan backup, which is what I was planning. I wasn’t going to rely on it and I am pretty much aware it’s 50/50 if it will be there in 5 years.

Does it have to be free? Dropbox offers 1 TB for $10/mo, OneDrive for $2.50 / mo.

Also, Flickr offers 1 TB of free photo storage. YouTube offers unlimited video storage, and you can keep your videos private. Bonus is that both sites will allow you to easily share with people if you choose to. Both are probably still going to be around in 5 years, and is unlikely to be completely destroyed by the US government – you won’t have any privacy with either, but your data shouldn’t outright disappear either.

One huge problem with Mega is their astonishing refusal to let people using many common browsers access their site. I use one they “support” and I still only get the “update” to a modern browser page.

I would never trust my data to a site where I might not be able to access it from other devices.

Mega was very slow when I used to use them. Bitcasa will give you 25 GB for free; box.com, 10 GB.
