Is my laptop monitor repairable?

Every so often, the backlight seems to flicker on and off, causing the screen to flash black. Other times the thing being displayed on the monitor will slowly fade away, revealing a light gray screen with rows of pea sized dark gray dots. Both these problems are temporarily fixed by moving the monitor back and forth.

Can this be fixed or is it time to get a new monitor? If it is fixable, is it something that a computer layman could take care of?

Probably a broken video cable in the hinge.
This is a very common problem, but it’s not really something that the average computer owner can fix, unless they are pretty handy.
What computer?

It’s a Dell Inspiron something-or-other; I don’t remember the number. The laptop is about two years old.

Thanks.

There are probably take-apart diagrams on the web. You may also be able to buy the cables or a new LCD on ebay.
