Is my lawn being invaded?

In my lawn there are several areas where what looks like balls of fungus are breaking through the soil. They are either yellow or brown and smell very bad. They seem to be growing although slowly. I have tried to look up resources about lawn fungus or lawn dieases and have not encuntered anything that sounds like what I have. Is this mysterious growth a fungus or are there pod people growing in my dirt and of so am I making them mad by digging them up.

It might be some kind of a worm (fire worms??? don’t quote me on that) At Saratoga (upstate New York) the worms invaded the turf course (horse racing) - they had to do some pesticide. This sound like the way they described it. Your local Home Depot or nursery would probably know and probably be able to sell you an expensive fix

It might be some kind of a worm (fire worms??? don’t quote me on that). These worms have invaded most of the East Coast. At Saratoga (upstate New York) the worms would have ruined the turf course (horse racing) - they had to do some quick pesticide work to save the racing. This sounds like the way they described it. Read the second one! Read the second one!!!

It makes more sense. I thought I had stopped the submit…

Ack.

Sounds like Brown Patch. Any Lowes or Home Depot can fix you up with a fungicide spray. Personally, I like the ones that attach to your garden hose for distribution.

I have done some more research and have concluded that they are called puffballs and are a form of mushroom. Thank you for your help.

Friends of mine who know their mushrooms wax rhapsodic about puffball mushrooms. They slice them and batter-fry them. I’m very wary of untrained mushroom eating, though, and I wouldn’t eat them without some expert advice. Nat’l Geographic publishes a great mushroom hunting guide with color photos of hundreds of kinds of mushrooms, edible and dangerous.
