Is my wireless card damaged? 3mbps via internal adapter, 11mbps using android tether. Why?

I’ve been getting around 3mbps on my laptop. I thought maybe it was because I use it in my bedroom. My desktop, in same room as my wireless router gets 11mbps.

I just got a new android phone. I disabled my internal wireless adapter and used the tether feature to connect to my wireless network using phone connected to laptop. I’m getting 11mbps on laptop via phone in bedroom.

I installed the latest drivers for my internal adapter and it’s still 3mbps. Its an Intel Pro/Wireless 2200 BG. Is there a setting that may be limiting my internal adapter? Or is it more likely that it’s just failing?

It is possible the internal antenna is shielded just enough by the laptop case that the signal is weaker than the same laptop with an external antenna (your phone in this case). If you move the laptop close to the wireless router does the signal get stronger? I have a laptop with a built-in super duper apple airport extreme and I get a better connection when I plug a 59.00 netgear USB external adapter into the USB port There are likely some settings you can access for your internal adapter, how depends on what operating system. Assuming Windows, if you right-click the adapter in Device Manager and check out the properties there might be some settings for antenna strength, indoor/outdoor mode, etc. and fiddling with those might gaina some more bandwidth. One note, 3mbps is still likely faster than your entire internet connection so that speed shouldn’t be creating a bottleneck unless you have a very fast home internet connection.
