Is P(p)hotoshop a verb now?

I was lkistening to a podcast and the guy mentioned, “we will have to photoshop him in later,” Is it now a lowercase verb? “I photoshooped it?” or should it still be “I Photshopped it?” Can you say you photshopped something if you didn’t use Photoshop?

You can xerox on any copy machine, so I think you can photoshop on any picture editor.

It does have a nicer ring than “digitally edit.”

As much as Adobe hates it, it’s become pretty standard usage. (Also, just 'shop for short). Google and PDF are used as verbs, too.

Well, the OED has entry for Photoshop (capitalized) as a verb. I think it’s gone the way of xerox, and will soon be non-capitalized.

Adobe is kinda prickly about either one, actually.

As much as I hate those trademark-as-verb things (photoshopping, googling, whatever, they all sound extremely dumb and sloppy), that page is silly. They can not seriously expect people to say “Adobe® Photoshop® software” instead of Photoshop.

Almost everybody with a trade mark wants people to do these sorts of things. I am told it has to do with keeping their trade mark and not allowing it to fall into the public domain. I have heard that companies will occasionally send out letters to newspapers and magazine publishing houses request that the publishing companies use the terms as the mark holders want. I have always wondered if Adobe would has a case suing some one from publishing that they photoshopped something. As an aside the google toolbar says “photoshopped” should be spelled “photo-shopped”.

They don’t. They’re just fulfilling the legal requirement to defend their trademark, so the term “Photoshop” doesn’t automatically become a generic term.

I agree, they stand to lose the trademark if they don’t fight for proper usage.
However, colloquial usage will always win out, no matter how much Adobe and Lego fight it.

This leads to an interesting question. Adobe objects to photoshop as a verb. What about 'shop? Would it make any difference were it spelled shop without the apostophe indicating the missing letters?

They’ll probably threaten to drop a line to the cops to make you stop cropping Photoshop.

I hope this is useful to the OP.

Last week I gimped my lockblocks to look like a big hairy cock and balls.

Then I photoshopped my legoS to look a pretty young shaved vagina.

You decide.

I do my photoshopping in MSPaint, but I call it rotoscoping. I’m looking into getting the GIMP though, which makes me wonder-- which is correct, “I gimped this part”, or “I GIMPed this part”?
