Is Passover late this year?

Help settle a marital argument. One of us says Passover isn’t late this year. The other says it is.

For those of you who don’t have an opinion on that, do you think Easter was late this year (it happened during Passover)?

Well, define late.

This year it was April 8. Last year it was April 19, next it’ll be March 29. I’m not sure exactly when the earliest and latest possible dates are, but looking at the last several years and the next several years, 2009 falls pretty much right in the middle.

The earliest possible date for Passover is March 21.

The latest possible date is April 20-somethingth.

So it fell on the 19th of 30-ish possible days?

I will state for the record: April 8th is late only for certain values of “late.” April 19th would clearly be late.

Who won?

Well, since the definition is “first full moon of Spring” that gives you a 29-day window after March 20, yesno? So a little after median, but not late.

Since the consensus here seems to be “not late”, me.

shit it was already passover? My grandparents are gonna kill me for not calling…

Yeah, it started April 8, and ended about an hour and a half ago on the East Coast. We already ate our post-Passover dinner- Thai food this year.

“Why is this grandson not like the others?..”

Is he the evil one, the simple one, or the one who’s too young to ask?

Huh. To me, Easter felt like it fell late this year. I never woulda guessed it was even later last year. Perception is a funny thing.

Er, Easter Sunday 2008 was on 23 March, only a day later than the earliest it can possibly be.

To answer the OP, this means that it felt late this year, but it wasn’t really that late. The latest date for Easter (in the Western calendar) is 25 April.

No, it was on the 15th of Nisan, like it always is.

::clap::

Ok. But the dates I listed were for Passover.

Aha! That’s why it felt later then - it was.

About seven years ago, I printed out the dates of all the Jewish holidays between 2002 and 2013. Passover’s start date varied in that time between March 26 and April 24 so that April 9 (the date of the first full day, not the first seder) is right in the middle. April 24 was in 2005 incidentially, so that Passover actually extended into May that year.

not late. midrange i’d say.

the orthodox church goes after passover so we are having pascha this sunday. april 19th is not the latest we have gone. sometimes we have pascha the first sunday in may, when passover is in late april.

that is when easters are 5 weeks apart in the west and east. just try finding cadbury mini eggs then!! that is why i go for a vernal equinox basket instead of easter basket. easier to find peeps on march 21st.
