Is it illegal for Senators and Representatives to smoke inside the US Capitol? I don’t think I’ve seen anyone smoke at the Capitol since John Poindexter at the Iran Contra hearings.
There’s a good chance it is.
But if a Senator or Representative was doing it who would stop them? None of the staff at the capitol have much authority if dealing with an angry congressman.
I was thinking the Sergeant at Arms might be the one to enforce such a policy.
According to C-SPAN, smoking has been banned on the senate floor since 1914 and the house floor since 1871. Smoking policies in congressional offices is set by the House and Senate members individually. Smoking policy in comitee rooms is set by each committee. Smoking is permitted in hallways and cloak rooms.
Yup. Smoking’s been illegal in the Capitol for a while, and is, I believe, illegal in all Federal buildings now. (California and Arizona have smoking bans in state buildings as well, and I imagine most states are similar.) John Poindexter smoked in blatant violation of the law.
