I’m off-topic here, but OMG, he looks so young.
I do not understand why, in the U.S., there is a constant flow of drivel suggesting that every living high school grad ought to attend university. Why? Many of them are barely literate. On this site, we can see many academics attempting to justify admitting ever more massively unqualified students to universities. It is often amusing to hear the President and so many others always speak about *The middle class *as though there was no longer any working (or unemployable) class. I think this silliness of sending dumb people to universities fits nicely with the concept of no more working class.
Finally, as a former employer, I personally cannot imagine any employer outside of the post office or government who would hire that girl. Her dreadful capabilities are only the fourth in line of her problems for employment, with the first three being; attitude, attitude, attitude as usual.
So she can neither read nor write in cursive, and also cannot write in non-cursive.
OTOH she is capable of such flights of eloquenceas “Omg people calling n praying n shit lol I need a drink smoke and a pray my head killing me right now cannot wait when this day end” and “oh really I have jackass lawyers on my ass kno “JR” want to up in ok.”
So the sky’s the limit for this budding young poet.
Regards,
Shodan
Actually, the definition you posted matches the one I linked to. It was used incorrectly here as it was when I apparently did it in 2008. Not sure why you’d bother to look through my history to see if I used it either way. Kinda scary that you would bother. You should probably get a new hobby.
Edit: I see you are referring to the second definition which is mostly a result of people using the term incorrectly. Either way, her ability to read cursive does not beg the question in either sense.
It seems being president is really stressful as Clinton and Bush went in non-gray haired and come out of it gray.* I was a little suprised when just two years in I saw a press conference on tv and Obama already had some gray.
*I’ve only paid attention to politics since I voted for Clinton.
Well, no, not exactly. Almost everyone understands the role of junior colleges, trade schools, and intern-to-work programs. Or just getting a job.
What really makes people uncomfortable is when a very different percentage of black high school graduates are competent to go to college than the percentage of white high school graduates. That busts our chops.
It leads most of us to believe that the school system has racial barriers built in. It leads a very small minority of us to believe that blacks are racially inferior. (I hold with the former gripe! I believe that the system of school funding, largely based on neighborhood taxes, is discriminatory, and produces a vicious circle of disadvantage.)
…a federal judge invited the Kansas City, Missouri, School District to come up with a cost-is-no-object educational plan and ordered local and state taxpayers to find the money to pay for it.
Kansas City spent as much as $11,700 per pupil–more money per pupil, on a cost of living adjusted basis, than any other of the 280 largest districts in the country. The money bought higher teachers’ salaries, 15 new schools, and such amenities as an Olympic-sized swimming pool with an underwater viewing room, television and animation studios, a robotics lab, a 25-acre wildlife sanctuary, a zoo, a model United Nations with simultaneous translation capability, and field trips to Mexico and Senegal. The student-teacher ratio was 12 or 13 to 1, the lowest of any major school district in the country.
The results were dismal. Test scores did not rise; the black-white gap did not diminish; and there was less, not greater, integration.
Increasing funding isn’t going to produce short-term results. You’ll need several years: it takes time to recruit teachers. It takes time for their efforts to show up on test scores.
I could buy you a dragster…but you’d need a while to learn to drive it at racing speeds.
If you’re talking about Kansas City, that wasn’t the problem. The extra funding and the program it enabled ran for over a dozen years.
ARE THOSE THE BEST EXAMPLES I CAN FIND!!! Dude, you are trying to get me to catch, on video, the president of the most powerful superpower in the world speaking as if he is kickin’ it with the homies. I was lucky to get some semi candid footage. It’s weak tea to dismiss it with “mild use of AAVE expressions”. I have to ask again…do you speak AAVE?
But never mind. Mostly it looks like we agree. I think he picked it up from his college friends, and it seems you kinda agree with that. I don’t know how that means anything different than how I speak it though. Seems like you are reaching for something, but I can’t figure out what. If both Obama and I speak AAVE when around other blacks, but tend to switch it up when around white people who don’t speak it, how does it matter a whit if I got it from friends and family and he got it from college friends? What’s this weirdness about "far from being a typical speaker of AAVE? I can’t even make sense of your point anymore.
ETA: I think I’m picking up from your posts that you don’t think black people who DIDN’T have a white mom, African dad and white dad can switch out of AAVE and speak standard English? I am honestly trying to see where you are actually going with this.
I’m gonna be honest. I only opened this thread to scan for posts from **MoL **and Nzinga. I just can’t get enough of their responses to threads like this.
Well drewtwo99, it seems some white folk are really weird about Black dialects. You dig my rap, blood?
My dick be broke!
Heeee!!! Stop it! Don’t make me go back and reread old threads. I think I will. I have had the hardest, longest day ever. I am going to crack this Glenfiddich I’ve been saving and I am going to find the funny threads.
Fair enough. Obviously, I’m not going to be satisfied by one exception where other factors cannot be eliminated. For instance, as long as the program lasted, were good teachers actually being hired?
Overall, the correlation between per-student expenditures and outcomes is pretty damn high. Correlation may not be causation, but it’s damn suggestive.
There are obviously other influences. I’ve mentioned before the fact that uneducated people tend not to have a lot of books in their homes, which is a disadvantage for their kids. Books in homes are also highly correlated with success.
Crime rates, drug-use rates, a lot of other crap is also factored in.
Still, spending more on education seems like a very good start in trying to break the self-sustaining cycles of poverty and ignorance. Would the situation have been any better in Kansas City, MO, if the money had not been spent?
Read the link I gave. It is very educational.

I said nothing of the sort. How did you get that idea? Anybody can learn to code-switch. I said just that Obama didn’t learn AAVE from childhood, like many speakers of AAVE did.
Wondering if we have an update on Mr Jeantel’s progress…is no news good news here?
No doubt, but probably in a code-switching kind of way. He wasn’t raised speaking AAVE.
I mean, I can fit right in with Texas rednecks if I so choose, but I wasn’t raised by parents who speak like that, and nor do I speak like that unless I’m in certain situations and groups of people. I imagine Obama’s much the same, except with AAVE.
I’d be curious how he speaks around his immediate family (Michelle, Sasha and Malia) and how much AAVE is included there.
