Is Sydney or Melbourne The Center of Australian TV?

I was wondering if most Australian TV shows are made in Sydney or in Melbourne? Is there a “Hollywood of Australia” so to speak?

A lot of shows are made in Melbourne because thats where the biggest and oldest studios are… but there is no “Hollywood of Australia”. Sydney would probably the second as it is well known, and what Melbourne has, Sydney has to get (and vice versa). The Gold Coast in Qld has had a fair share of the industry market (especially since its warm and sunny most of the year), and not to forget South Australia who produce a lot of local content. I believe the state governments have extra grants to help the filming industries - and maybe Melbourne and Sydney’s grants are bigger (maybe).

But this trend is not just limited to the film industry. If you want to further your career without traveling overseas, you will look for work in Melbourne or Sydney. Both cities are more populated than most other cities in Australia and usually attract higher salaries.

Melbourne is a very perochial second city with a Napoleon complex - to the point of there being shows that (obviously, in Melbourne only) advertise that they were made in Melbourne. “Neighbours is proudly filmed in Melbourne…”

To that end, there are a number of shows filmed there for that reason - alternately, there are shows filmed in Melbourne because that’s where the show’s star lives and they don’t want to move (e.g. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?).

In terms of movies, both the Gold Coast and Sydney have thrown money at studios, which get a lot of business when the A$ is low and next to none when the A$ is high. Probably the most established film centre, however, is Sydney because the animation, FX and production studios are all centralised there.
