Is the Dogue de Bordeaux a Mastiff?

This would be the slobbering, goofy, really cool dog in the movie “Turner and Hooch”.

I have seen “dog” people on one side call this dog a separate breed and others call it a “French Mastiff”

There seems to be a lot of ambiguity regarding this breed.
I see different opinions on every website I check out.

I say the dawg is a separate breed.

I have a bet riding on this, and I and my buddy will bow to the collective opinion of the Teeming Millions.

Many thanks for any input!

I think it was a prank started by Hugh Troy who later was the head of the OSS.

mas·tiff (mstf)
n.
Any of an ancient breed of large strong dogs, probably originating in Asia and having a short, often fawn-colored coat.

Unless you have proof positive of the DDBs ancestry containing no mastiffs or mastiff desendants I’d have to conclude it meets the criteria.

Yeah, I think the Dogue de Bordeaux, Tosa Inu, Presa Canario, and Fila Brasilero are all considered mastiffs. I’m sure I left some out.

Most things I’ve read about Dogues point to them as having descended from Mastiff breeds, and I’ve heard of it being referred to as a French Mastiff. In fact, most dog encyclopedias I’ve seen have them double-indexed under DDB and FM.

Yup, a mastiff. That’s what “dogue” (as opposed to “dog”) means. (And to confuse things, “dog” comes from “dogue”, but they’re not the same.)

The Dogue De Bordeaux is also called the French Mastiff and the Bordeaux Bulldog. (Among other things.)

Yes the DDB is a mastiff type.

Just as Dogue means mastiff in French, dogge also means mastiff in German.

Therefore my Great Dane, is not actually danish, as the germans call them the Deutsche Dogge, or german mastiff.

The Great Dane was developed from English Mastiffs and greyhounds, while the DDB was probably developed from the English Mastiff and various bulldog breeds. Just my wag.
