Is The Dyson Desk Fan Worth $350?

I saw these things at the local Kohl’s store-I cannot belive that anyone would buy one.
First: it doesn’t deliver much of a breeze.
Second: it looks pretty cheap-one drop off the deask and it is gone.
Third: $350 for a desk fan? When you can by a bladed fan for $20?
Anyone have one? Are you happy with your purchase?

First, it delivers a steady and strong breeze
Second, unlikely that a tip off the desk would break it, I handled the display model and they seem plenty sturdy
Third, I really can’t justify the cost but I wish I could convince myself.

No. Not worth it.

This. What about could be worth $350? What does it do that is so much better than a traditional fan of similar dimensions?

Apparently you have never noticed or been disturbed by the extreme “buffeting” of the air stream that a regular, bladed fan causes. Me neither.

You’re not alone. Dyson’s stuff have a “cool” factor but tend to be overpriced in my humble opinion.

One would also have to assume that when sh!t hits the Dyson, it’s much less evident throughout the extremities of the room.

I think that someone who spends $350 for a desk fan probably would probably have the means to invest in a central air conditioner first, obviating the need for a desk fan.

But, supposing I were somehow in the market for a fan, I’d consider one. The technology is neat, they look nice, come from a reputable company, and are affordable (in absolute terms). Those are the same reasons I’ve owned 12 different Apple computers over the years.

Psst…

[Dmark looks around furtively…]

…come over here - lemme show ya something.

Dyson ain’t gonna be happy, but here is a link to a manufacturer in China who will sell the same damned thing for $25-$40 each, but the problem is you need to order a minimum of 500. Still, quite a difference in price per unit vs the Dyson unit price!
BTW, I was never here, you didn’t hear it from me…

[DMark slinks off down a dark alley…]

I wouldn’t spend that much on a fan (unless I had a LOT more money to play with) but I have to confess that I have a huge crush on Mr. Dyson. I have a Dyson vacuum and we have more than an owner-vacuum relationship for sure.
God help me if he ever invents a new coffee maker.

There’s nothing to hit; it would be like just throwing shit through a hoop.

I got one off an eBay-like website on China for $50. It’s weaker and noisier than the real thing.

Oh, they’re not really bladeless. The blades (or impellers or vanes or whatever you want to call them) are in the base. Since the blades are the dirtiest and hardest to clean parts of a fan, I’m waiting to see if these hidden blades also get dirty.

Ever notice you never see Dyson and Jobs in the same place at the same time?

But regular fans will get more expensive too if congress passes the Buffet Tax.

Guaranteed, they will get dirty, just as surely as the blades of a CPU fan hidden inside a computer case.

If 350 is too much, I saw a mini version for only 250 or maybe 200 at BB&B a month or two ago. The thing barely had enough wind to cool a bowl of hot soup, but it sure LOOKS cool… that’s worth it, right?

Now now, Ludovic, that was completely unwarrented.

Clearly the Dyson Fan needs some enhancement to justify its price. Therefore, I’d like to suggest a button that turns it into a giant bubble wand.

Bought one. Thought it would be purrfect. Space efficient, no blades to clean etc. etc. Cool factor of 10.

But the bloody thing is so annoyingly noisy at night I gave it away to a kid who can sleep through anything.

Its replacement? A $20 fan from the Reject Shop.

Thanks Mr Dyson. Your vacuum cleaners suck. Your fans blow.

I might buy one if I had paid $3500.00 for the desk. Which I wouldn’t.

mr dyson was on tv showing off his new heaters that look just like the fans. i’m sure they are just as expensive. he said that they would evenly heat your room.

would you buy a $350 heater?
