I’m just curious, is the fassion industry larger in France than it is in other countries, relative to population size? The answer is probably yes, but I’d like to know. I, as a young American, have been conditioned to believe that the main priorities of a French woman’s life, in order, are:
Smelling perfume.
Shopping at “boutiques”.
Seducing movie spies with their accents.
Breathing, eating, consuming water, sleeping, etc.
Is there some statistic on this? Can someone say from experience?
I go to France fairly often. French women do tend to be fairly hot on average and the difference tends to be striking if you just hop on a plane from the U.S. and then walk onto the streets of Paris a few hours later. They don’t shop at as many large, chain stores as Americans do. I am told that their wardrobes are smaller but of higher quality, They tend to be thin and wear a lot of dark clothes that seem to be “fashionable”. There are a whole lot of perfume stores in Paris but I have never noticed people wearing it more than they do back in the U.S.
According to this PDF file in french :
In 2000 fashion industry in France (including clothes, footwear, leather, perfumes and jewelry) employed more than 180 000 persons and had a turnover of € 29 billions, amounting to 5% of France’s industrial production (clothes alone : 94 000 workers, € 11 billions turnover).
Maybe another poster will be able to dig figures for other countries for comparison purpose.
