Is the resistance to the zipper merge a failure of signage?

Glorious.

I was driving along I80 just SW of Chicago a couple of weeks ago. The signs did not say “Zipper merge.” I forget exactly what they said but it was along the lines of, “Merge in 1 mile - stay in your lane until then.” And 1 mile later, “Merge now.” Was the smoothest merge I can ever remember.

Although the name is accurate, people don’t view the name as an image. Maybe it confuses the people offended by being passed by someone who arrives later. So I think they should just call it the “both lanes, take turns” merge. Would this solve all the problems? No.
