If I recall how - - - works, when a user downloads a file, they actually get pieces of it from several different users, when there are multiple sources available.
Did the RIAA somehow make sure they got their “proof file” from a single target, or are they suing everybody they got a piece of the file from?
Since this is a factual question that does not discuss how to trade files, I presume this is OK under board rules. If I’m wrong about that, I apologize.
And for god’s sake, please, nobody turn this into a debate about file sharing… There’s been many, many other threads about that.
I have no idea what evidence they have, but I suspect that the split file process you mention might give them a problem in prosecuting. Of course if there were 1500 files transferred, it is doubtful much at all will help. I thought there was a little encryption going on in these processes, guess not.
Here is a link to a source of help for those already subpoenaed.

I don’t see how encryption would help. The way I understand it, they’re going after people who are sharing. So, theoretically, just by typing in the search box, they can nail you.
You can be on the systems without sharing usually. Besides that would infringe on the ligitimate uses of the system. There are fledling systems out there that use methods of file transfer than encrypt the info using a couple different methods. It’s benefit is that though the RIAA might know your there and talking, they can’t hear what your saying.
It’s a moot point. It doesn’t matter where you get the files from; what matters is that illegally copied files are on your computer. That’s the copyright violation.
No. Regarding the subpoenas being put forth now, which is what the thread is about, what matters is that the files are being offered for sharing, not that they are on your computer.
There are perfectly legal ways to have copies of copyrighted files on your computer as you’re allowed to make a backup of cd’s you own as long as your not circumventing copyright protection. I think even that might be in question.
BTW, if I own a Metallica cd and download an mp3 of one of their songs off the internet, and I still commiting copyright infringement? Or in other words, does the backup I make have to come from MY cd?
