Is the Straight Dope marketed anywhere or in any way? If so by Whom?

I was just wondering where SDMB is marketed…is there an entity that pays for ads for the SDMB to be seen by others? Does the Reader have ad space anywhere promoting it’s subscriptions and are we mentioned in *** that *** ad space? Just wondering if TPTB are trying to get more traffic to this site?

I asked similiar questions a few weeks ago:

The silence was deafening. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m bumping this because I am sincerely curious.

A simple way to promote the boards would be expanding threadspotting on the Straightdope main page. Instead of one link, add a larger section showcasing the “top ten” threads or something in that vein.

Hey, I think the Perfect Master himself could stand to promote us a little more: those fellows on Mythbusters end practically every one of their shows with a little blurb about their fansite with its associated message boards.

It couldn’t difficult could it be for Cecil to end a couple columns a month with “And if you’d like any further discussion, please head over to the SDMB, where Diomedes and some other schlubs will gladly pick up where I left off,” right?

Yeah, and we could put up a community page like the freakin’ web browser Opera has done! How pathetically geeky do you have to be to hang out at a website devoted to a web browser fercrissakes! I mean, if the uberdorks there (and I’ll note that many of the photos you see on that page are user generated content) can do something like that, then CL can do that here.

Heck, if the Reader wants to sell more copies of their books, then just put a photo of a scantily clad Doper on the cover and they’ll fly off the shelves! (No shit. Robert Heinlein’s Friday was his best selling book, all because of the cover art, and Heinlein himself said that if he could put that cover on every one of his books, he would, because then he knew for certain that they would sell.) And cram the arguments about how that would “lower the tone” here. A.) We’re not something like The Journal of Applied Results B.) Given that many Dopers here tend to be tatted, pierced, have fuscia colored hair, I’d say that an “edgy” look for the Dope (in some areas) would be a more accurate advertisement of this place than a turkey wearing a mortar board. C.) Many of our Dopers are a helluvlalot hotter than the plasticine models used to advertise everything else in the world, so we’d be raising the tone of global advertising!

Wow - silence is deafening. What’s that ringing, ringing in my ears.
