Is the Treasurer of the United States always a woman?

Every piece of paper currency I have, which is admittedly not a lot, has a woman’s name as Treasurer. I noticed this a while back. Is there some sort of rule that the Treasurer has to be a woman?

There sure do seem to be a lot of women. In fact, unless I missed one, I had to go all the way back to William Alexander Julian to find a dude. Here’s a list.

Since Truman, it’s been an almost-exclusively female position, and most of the last few have been Hispanic as well. Since it’s not a high-visibility position, it doesn’t get a lot of attention but it still allows administrations to trumpet how progressive they are by having a Hispanic woman in a high office.

It’s also become something of a tradition in the last few Republican administrations to specifically appoint a Hispanic woman to the position.
