Because my daughter has decided that this is the career that she wants (Broadway star, not blogger). She’s a California girl, due to graduate from high school next June, and beyond making plans to get a full ride to a performing arts university in Manhattan, she has no idea how to go about making her way in the big city while she works to make the big dream happen.
I suggested that maybe if some other aspiring Laura Osnes/Sutton Foster/Kristen Chenowith might be running a blog, she could pick up a few tips on how this is done.
Hopefully she is not just watching Rachel on Glee…let’s just say her character’s life is a smidgen unrealistic.
I don’t know of any blogs - but certainly a great idea and will be interested to read if anyone posts a link - but there have been some good documentary features on HBO and some of the other cable networks about young, aspiring actors hitting NYC.
I lived in NYC for a few years and met more than my share of wannabe Broadway stars - and to be honest, if you are young and talented and highly-motivated and have thick skin and have a Plan B (go home to family, go back to school, whatever) there is no reason not to give it a shot.
I have to admit, going the Broadway route for a California girl is a bit odd - most in NYC might wonder why she didn’t do the TV or movie career move first while living where she lives - but I understand the allure of live musical theater and understand that NYC is the center of that universe. Just let her know that there is indeed a certain New York animosity for the “California” personality…not that it will be impossible, but there will be some snide comments and jokes.
Hopefully someone will enter this thread with a link to the kind of blog your requested!
I don’t know about blogs, but a number of musical stars have written memoirs. Chenoweth has one called A Little Bit Wicked, and Patti LuPone’s is simply called Patti LuPone: A Memoir.
