Is there a browser addon that does this?

I tend to get a whole lot of web pages open. I’ll be reading one page, and I’ll open two links with it, and two links with that one, and sometimes I’ll lose interest in the page I’m reading and want to come back to it later, eventually I have 50 pages open, eating all my memory.

At that point, I need to figure out what to close, and what’s worth reading later. Sometimes I’ll just temporarily store the URLs of the interesting stuff and use notepad - it’s better to close the browsers entirely because that frees up wasted memory from leaks.

But that’s sort of a silly roundabout way of doing things. On the other hand, the pages aren’t worth populating bookmarks with, because I won’t be going back to them. So is there an addon for either IE or firefox that basically says “close this window, but remember the url because I want to read this later” and then builds a list of pages? That way I can go back and read them without having to keep them open until I do so, eating up memory.

Safari has a Reading List function that does exactly what you’re asking for.

If I’m understanding you correctly, what I would do is have all those pages open as tabs (in a single Safari session, which wouldn’t cause any memory issues with my newish computer), and would add one bookmark for the tabs so I can reopen them all later with a single click for reading, bookmarking (individually or again in tabbed groups), etc.

Read It Later for Firefox. There’s also one called Tark, but both seem limited.

TooManyTabs for Chrome and Firefox allow you to place tabs in suspension where they don’t take up resources but can be recovered with a click.
