We have 2 near Flint. It’s $7 per adult, 2 screens, double feature. I am very happy to see this weekend one of them has paired Hancock with Hellboy II. When we went there to see Wall-E they actually made us open the trunk of our car to make sure we weren’t smuggling in extra people. I laughed, hubby got mad.
My favorite part of the drive-in is the intermission footage with the singing dancing food. And of course the concession stand itself. Junior Mints yumm.
Depends on what you’d call “near”. There’s one outside of Winchester, VA, which is about 70 miles away. It’s not anything we’d make a special trip to Winchester for, but if we’re going to be there anyway and something good’s playing, we’ll go.
I was just curious because I know drive-ins are getting rare. Where I grew up, just 50 miles south of here, all the drive-ins are gone now. There used to be at least 4 within say 15 miles of home.
In my day us kids would go in our pajamas, and there was a playground up front under the screen, with a bunch of other kids playing in their jammies too. Seems like there used to be a per vehicle charge, not per person but I’m not positive.
There are a couple nearby. We took MilliCal to the closest a couple of weeks asgo – it was her first time at a drive-in (and my first time at one in about 20 years). She loved it. We saw Kung-Fu Panda and the beginning of the Indiana Jones film. She’s eager to go again, with a friend, but we have a commitmemnt this weekend.
The atmosphere has changed. Everyone gets there early and sort of tailgates as they wait for dusk – I don’t remember that happening at Drive-ins from 1960 to 1986. They toss footballs or frisbees around and visit the snack bar. Encouragingly, a lot of the waiting people sit in lawn chairs and read.
Yes! We have the Magic City in Barberton, the Lynn in Strasburg, the Midway in Ravenna.
spoke- (and everybody), check out Tales of the Starlight Drive-In by Cleveland’s Michael San Giacomo. This year is the 75th anniversary of the outdoor movie theater!
Yup-a-roonie. The Sunset Drive-In (complete with 1998-era Angelfire website,) is only about a five minute drive…ten if there’s traffic. They have four screens, each is a double feature, and obviously you can move to a new screen for the second show if you don’t want to see what’s on the screen you already watched.
It’s really cool because they don’t care if you bring outside food. We’ll pack a small grill and cook up our own burgers and steaks, and bring some beer.
There’s one near my parents house (where I grew up). For those familiar with South West Ontario, it’s just outside Woodstock. They usually show three movies. I believe the last time I went,I saw Pirates of the Carribean 1 as well as two others I can’t remember (maybe the one where Angelina Jolie plays Indiana Jones - I can’t be bothered to look it up).
There’s also one in Oakville (suburb of Toronto) which is reasonably close to where I live now. I haven’t been but as I understand things, there’s three screens with a double feature on each.
Yes we do, the Mendon Drive-In is about a 20 minute drive from my house. It has been in continuous operation since the 1950’s and shows double features of first run movies. The concession hut is big and very reasonably priced. I don’t know how they make any money. At $20 per vehicle for a double feature and cheap refreshments, it is way cheaper than a regular movie theater. It is a godsend for people like me with small children. It tends to be packed and it isn’t unheard for them to sell out an hour before the first movie starts.
There are none left in New Jersey, but we were just on vacation near Poughkeepsie and they have a drive-in so we took the kids to see Kung-Fu Panda. The kids had fun and it was their first Drive-in.
I got a kick out of being at one again. I use to go a lot both in NJ and San Diego. To make it even better, we were at the Rocking Horse Dude Ranch, so combine that with a drive-in movie and it was a retro 60s vacation.
