Don’t knock it. It’s all part of the experience.
I remember watching The Changeling at the parkside drive-in as a little kid as well as The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I didn’t fully understand The Changeling, but I knew it was a scary movie- I just thought Rocky Horror was weird …gave me an appreciation for good ghost stories and schlock, as well.
I wonder if any of these Drive-ins have special horror fest nights during October and into Hallloween? It’d be great to run an octuple feature on two screens- maybe some classic 70’s and 80’s horror on one screen and old Mummy/ Wolfman/Dracula horror on the other. Have a costume contest during an intermission and bobbing for apples and candy for the kids…
I also heard about some Christian Drive-in near Hell, Michigan that shows Jack Chick style, christian, propaganda movies for free.
Not near me in Japan. However, the Vineland Drive-In, 20 minutes from my childhood home in Southern California, is still operational.
Not too far away between Tyler and Kilgore, there’s the Apache which shows adult films. I’ve heard gay guys go there to hook up. I told my ex-girlfriend I might be interested in going there with her just to see what it’s like, but now that I’m single, I dare not.
If we weren’t a heavy tourist area, I don’t think any of the driveins would have survived. But the Skyway Drivein is thriving every summer, since it is right across from Peninsula State Park and a great place to take the family after you’ve set up camp in the woods.
The last one in Hawaii closed years ago.
Once theaters got advanced surround sound and Blockbuster Video hit our shores, hoping that our volatile weather would stay good for two hours just wasn’t worth it anymore.
Here in RI we have the fabulous Rustic Drive-In. It is on Route 146 in North Smithfield. For a time in the 1970s and 80s it showed porn, but is now back to general audience material. Three screens, no waiting.
Is there a problem with rain and drive-ins? (Serious question because I want to go see Batman at the drive-in this Friday and it’s supposed to rain.)
Does it seem surprising that rain will make the picture blurry? Interfere with the clarity of the sound? Make it unpleasant for the run to the john or snack bar? No? Then go for it.
Yes - The Route 66 Drive-In in Springfield, Illinois. It’s nowhere near Route 66.
Oh. I don’t care about any of that stuff. I thought they shut down or something.
I think they’d only shut down for dangerous weather. I remember watching MASH through a pretty good rain storm
The last one I went to was the Rosebowl, on Route 1 in Ashland. It had fallen on hard times and was only open on Saturday nights and showed hard core porn. John Holmes on a 50’ tall screen is a wonder to behold.
