Is there a google docs spreadsheet function for date recording?

I use google docs for my ‘checkbook.’

I was wondering if there’s a function that records the last time another cell got edited. So dimply entering a credit or debit would cause the date to get recorded automatically in another column. Marking a column that a transaction cleared could also record that date.
