Is there a name for the "Frogman" vocal technique?

It’s what Clarence “Frogman” Henry does in the “I’m a lonely frog” verse of “Ain’t Got No Home.” One description I read called it a “croak,” but I’m wondering if that particular mode of vocal production, where the sound is produced as the breath is drawn in, has a name?

Bonus points for an explanation of how this differs physiologically from normal vocal production.

“Vocal fry”, perhaps?

AFAIK, phonating on inhalation is usually called ::drumroll:: “Inhalation Phonation” or “Phonation on Inhalation.” There might be a sexier term, but I haven’t encountered it in my travels as a singer & voice teacher.

mbh’s suggestion of “Vocal Fry” is the closest thing I can think of to a common term that describes it.

The Wiki article about the vocal fry was very interesting. Thanks, all!
