Is there a name for the type of meditation designed to control reactions?

For example, i’ve noticed that since i started doing things like meditating or practicing self hypnosis and self suggestion my pain threshold has gone up. i’d like to think this is because i’ve managed to seperate my consciousness from my external stimuli. Meaning instead of reacting without thinking to external stimuli, i can observe a situation to determine which reaction is best before i react. Consciousness vs. instinct basically.

Am i just full of shit or is this a side effect of prolonged meditation and self hypnosis? Is seperating yourself from your ‘self’ to the point where you don’t react as strongly a normal side effect?
