The theme of "hopeless but valiant struggle by the outnumbered forces of good against cosmic evil"has reappeared in contemporary folk mythology. The kids in homeless shelters in Miami developed their own explanation for the unseen worlds: God, like Elvis, has left the cosmos. God has quit and is out of the picture. What remains is a struggle between the angels and demons for control of the universe. The angels are outnumbered and doomed to defeat. The kids can help hold off cosmic catastrophe a little longer by doing spiritual battle on the side of the angels.
Of course, the boys believe that they are the great warriors in this struggle. But the girls confided to a reporter that they have unique girl-powers on the spiritual plane that they don’t let the boys know about.
