Laura is simply Laura, so far as I know. Kathy can also be short for Kathleen. I’ve usually seen Cathy for Catherine, and Kathy for Kathleen, but either of those names can also be spelled with a “C” or “K.” As for nicknames generally containing more than one letter of the original name, there’s always exceptions. How 'bout Peggy for Margaret for starters?

I have friends with a daughter whose name is Miranda, and they nicknamed her Spike. Really. They worried about what would happen sometime in the future when she decided to become a punk, get herself pierced, and insist that she be called Spike. So they started calling her Spike shortly after she was born. By the time she was five, she decided she didn’t like the name Spike, and she now insists on being called Miranda.
