If my reading skills are up to snuff, Google suggests WMP 10 can’t be removed from Win XP. I don’t want this bloatware loaded on my PC, so if I can’t remove, can I permanently de-activate it?
Everytime I hit control, alt, delete, Windows Task Manager says Media Player is running in the background–even though I’m not playing it. Same story with Roxio: A message asking if I want to temporarily stop this #$@^!& program, even though it hasn’t been playing.
Stop me before I go to Linux.
I’m not sure why WMP is always running on your system. It certainly isn’t on mine.
I’ve never used it, but this site has software that will allow you to remove many things from XP that Microsoft says are too closely tied into the OS

It’s not free, but I believe it will basically give you the same amount of contol over what installs on your system as you get with some of the linux distributions.
There is not much need to remove it. You can go to Start - Run - (type “msconfig”) - Startup Tab and uncheck it if it currently loads at startup. That will prevent it from running automatically.
Then You can go to Start - Control Panel - Folder Options - File Types Tab and change all of the WMP associations to another program of your choice.
Try
Start > settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services
If Windows Media Player shows up, right-click and choose ‘properties’. About halfway down the resulting window should be a drop-down box labled ‘Startup Type’. Set to ‘Manual’ or ‘disabled’.
