It might just be me, but it seems to me that suddenly a staggering number of new songs on the radio are just covers. Didn’t it used to be that songs only occasionally got covered - and usually years after the original was released? Now there’s covers of songs being released almost immediately after the original song falls off the charts (and probably not even that long in some cases).
Has the world run out of original music? Am I imagining this?
The Billboard Hot 50 currently has one track that is a cover on it, the Pussycat Dolls’ version of Tori Alamaze’s “Don’tcha”. The Cast of Rent’s version of “Seasons Of Love” could vaguely be considered a cover, because that is hardly the first cast to perform that song, yet, still, they are the first cast to release it as a single.
So, one current cover? I’d say it’s just you.
Well, if it you limit it to Billboard’s Hot 50, sure there’s not going to be a lot. But I’m just talking about songs getting general airplay. I heard a cover of Robbie William’s Angel by Jessica Simpson. Westlife has a popular hit with their cover of Josh Groban’s “You Raise Me Up”. And yes, there’s the Pussycat Dolls cover of Dontcha. That’s just 3 examples off the top of my head, and all three are covers of songs that were released in the last year or so. While it’s only 3, that still seems like a lot more than I’m generally used to hearing.
