Is there an organization whose sole purpose is to inform customers abt bad business?

I’ve come to believe largely (after reading people like Jared Diamond, Jeffrey Sachs, and T. Friedman) that the bad aspects of globalization could be corrected if customers where better educated about the practices of the companies whose products they buy.* Companies change much faster than governments. That’s to say that second people stop buying a product because of what’s involved in making it is the moment that the company changes it’s practices.

I’m wondering if there is an organization whose sole purpose is to inform customers so that they can be a part of changing bad business practices around the world?

  • For a full explanation of this, read the last chapter of Diamond’s Collapse

I think what you’re talking about is called “Socially Responsible Purchasing” or “green business” (although the latter is often more about specifically environmental standards for businesses, rather than broader social responsibility).

Check out Co-op America’s Green Business website, which refers to their “Green Pages” listings.

This is geared more towards telling customers about good businesses, from the social-responsibility point of view, than to warning them about bad ones, which was what you asked about. But I guess it comes to more or less the same thing.
