Got a new 55" 4K TV. I would have been fine with 1080P but with the deals it was cheaper to go 4K. Looking around there’s not much content available outside of 4K Blu-rays.
It has a 4K Chromecast built-in, so I can cast anything 4k.
Here’s what I’ve found:
Netflix: $2 more a month. Mostly just their shows and a few movies. I’ll probably upgrade when Iron Fist comes out
Amazon Prime: More movies, but it’s not available to cast. Would need to shell out for a Fire TV
HBO Go: No 4k?
Hulu: No 4K?
You’ll have to try to find out if the original source was >=4K. Until recently, relatively few feature films have been shot digitally at 4K or higher (most are 2K), and movies shot on 35mm film have generally been mastered at 2K. Older features shot on 70mm have been mastered at 4K or higher, but relaltively few of them were made.
IMAX films (the original documentaries, not the repurposed Hollywood films) are among your best options for 4K material that is really 4K. But since I don’t have a 4K set myself (yet), I don’t happen to know where you could find them streamed in 4K. There are 4K Blu-rays, if you have a 4K BD player.
Just a quick plug, but Netflix has a new show called “Tales by Light” that chronicles the exploits of a different photographer in each episode and it is both pretty interesting and particularly stunning in 4k.
I am not sure, but I believe most of Netflix original content streams in 4k.
I like Daredevil and Jessica Jones. They are not stunningly beautiful, but are in 4k. I thought Luke Cage was terrible, but it is also in 4k. I believe House of Cards is, too.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend - OK movie, but beatiful
Sense8 was an odd show, but I liked it more as it went. It’s also in 4k.
