A friend of mine has severe allergies. He has had three allergy tests taken and has allergies or sensitivities to about twenty five foods and just about everthing that floats in the air. He is severely inflammed all over his body every day. His worst symptom is tooth pain, witch is caused by the sinus pressure pressing on his front teeth(which were knocked out in junior high). His nose is permanently stuffy and sore. He itches just about everywhere just about all the time, especially on his head. Also, his GI tract causes him alot of pain and discomfort. These allergies have been getting steadily worse over the last few years(he is 29) and are driving him quite mad.
Has anyone ever found relief from these types of severe allergies. If so please tell me about it.
Yes, there is “hope”, even if there is no cure.
First of all, he MUST stop eating all those foods he is sensitive to - no exceptions!!! That alone should provide significant relief within a week (if not sooner)
Second, he should look into desensitization shots for things like pollen and animal dander. Getting stuck in the arm isn’t fun, and he’ll need to do it for a couple years at least, but for most people it does work. Personally, I found the pain of 4 pin-pricks a week for 5 years less of a bother than being constantly congested, itchy, and sick feeling but hey, that’s just me.
Third, if severe problem continue there are medications. These vary in strength, effects, and side effects so he really needs to work with a doctor on this.
Yeah, I used to have severe allergies. Strictly speaking, I still do, however, I’ve learned to manage the situation so most of the time they don’t cause me pain and misery, and when they do, I know how to go about getting relief.
Get him to an allergist immediately, if he hasn’t gone already.
I don’t have food allergies, thankfully. I do have allergies to animals and their fur/feathers/wool/hair, environmental sensitivities (scented anything, pollens, etc), and I have to be very careful about what detergents, deodorants, lotions etc that I use. All I can do is avoid them.
Good luck to your friend. Get him to a proper, knowledgeable allergist.
I had horrible allergies until I moved out of Houston a couple years ago. Every ime I go back I have to be heavily medicated. Maybe a move to somewhere else will do him good?
My brother had allergies to pollen, ragweed, dogs, cats, anything airborne. He would wake up with blood all over his pillow from several bloody noses in the night, and several times he couldn’t get his eyes open because mucus had sealed them shut in the night.
He took allergy shots every week for several years. One day we get a call that he’s had a reaction and needs to be driven home.
He’s never had a reaction to any of his previous allergies since.
Get him to an allergist. Now.
Like everyone else has said, he needs to work with his doctor to figure out what will work best for him. Since he’s had 3 allergy tests, I’m guessing he’s been to an allergist. For some people (like Broomstick above) allergy shots work, for me they just made things worse. Different antihistamines can help, but different ones work for different people, for example, my mom gets help from Claritin, while Zyrtec is my friend.
Cut out as much of the bad foods as he can, on my last series of tests, there were only 5 foods that I didn’t react to at all; which can be tough to make a meal out off.
If say tomatoes are one of his worst triggers, definitely ditch them and work towards cutting out the others.
One thing I haven’t seen mentioned, is air filtration. I’d suggest getting the special air filters for the a/c unit if he has one and a room air filter; they’ve done wonders at my house. One of my friends uses Benadryl cream on her hives when she breaks out, I find topical relief from Ahava body products.
I guess my best advice is to try different things, one at a time until he can reach an equilibrium that works for him and that filtration is a very good thing. Good luck to your friend.
My hubby is having a severe allergic reaction to something. He hasn’t taken the tests necessary to find out what is the problem. He has been to the emergency room and doctor. He is broke out in a bad rash and has severe leg swelling. They give him antibiotics and some cream. Lasix to take the fluid off his legs, which isn’t working. It got better then cleared up. We thought it was a reaction to blueberries so he laid off of those. We were wrong it’s back again. Now we are thinking it is horseradish. Not sure. He really needs to go get tests. Hope your friend gets better. Not much advice here just wanted to share our story.
