You’re right, that wasn’t a James Otto song. I confused it with James’s Otto’s I Got a Seriously Crazy Internet Stalker (Who thinks I know who she is in real life) from his seminal album Get This Crazy Woman Away From Me. Moved me to tears it did.
Knock it off. If you have a problem with another poster, take it to the Pit.
Steve Goodman wrote “You Never Even Called Me By Your Name”–as Coe admits in his introduction. Some of his other “hits” were outright purchased from songwriters–they got a lump sum, he got the credit & the royalties.

P.S. My most favorite line of the song is “Its better to be hated for who you are than be loved for who you’re not.”.

Yeah, Gillian Welch is my answer to this thread.
Darling remember from when you come to me
that Im the pretender,
Im not what Im supposed to be
but who could know, lf Im a traitor?
times the revelator, revelator.
And the great barge sank.
And the Okies fled.
And the great emancipater
took a bullet in the head.
Another intelligent country song is “I Wouldn’t Have It Any Other Way” from Aaron Tippin.

P.S. My most favorite line is at the beginning when Aaron sings “Sometimes I’ve had to go without for being my own man.”.
