Dang this thread, I am having intense Key lime pie cravings.
Lime actually is quite tasty on fish (and chicken, too). Especially when combined with hot peppers. But, once again, it’s all about different flavors. Just like I enjoy lime on Mexican or Thai seafood of any sort, it’d feel out of place on Mediterranean dishes.
I came in to mention chicken picatta.
And lemon butter is much better than lime butter.
Lately I’ve been drinking my gin and tonics (and rum and tonics) with lemon and a dash of bitters. As for the Pimm’s cup, I generally do use lemonade. And cucumber.
Lemons smell better than limes.
Ah, yes, this is true.
Which is exactly what I said, in a thread where people have mentioned experimenting with other than the usual in many things.
Lemon is better than lime in:
mayonnaise
salad dressing
pasta-and-seafood dishes
poppyseed muffins
avgolemono
Greek salad
. . .
Because I have a bag of said key limes on hand, here’s what’s on the menu tonight:
Ahi tuna - cut into small cubes. Flash-fry them in a hot skillet until half-cooked and half-raw, adding a little chopped white onion and salt and pepper during the last few seconds. Serve the tuna in steamed corn tortillas, with limon wedges squeezed generously over the fish, and squirts of sriracha or maybe habanero sauce to spice things up.
Greek avgolemeno soup. GOTTA be lemon in that
In Thai, there is no distinction between the two. They’e both called manao, and I’ve given up trying to explain the difference between them.
Does lime go that well with chocolate? I’ve been going through these limited-edition Jaffa Cake Lemon Cake Bars from McVitie’s like there’s no tomorrow, not sure I can imagine them working as well with lime.
I could live on the Key Lime Coconut patties from Anastasia (seen on this page). Key lime/coconut patties dipped in dark chocolate. Yum.
Hmm. I’m beginning to suspect that desserts are something that, as a rule, fare better with lemon. Yes, we all know key lime pie is wonderful, but I guess I think lemon is usually better for sweets. A lot of people seem to think lemon is better for chicken and fish; I disagree, and obviously this boils down to taste. I really, really like lime. I will agree that there are, of course, certain chicken and fish dishes (or dishes in general, I suppose I should say) that lemon works better for. I was just curious because every time I see lemon used I think, “Lime would be better,” but yeah, there are some things that I just hadn’t thought of for which I believe lime would make a poor substitute.
This thread makes me hungry and thirsty.
Caesar Salad, must have lemon, no substitutions.
Thai food, must have lime, sorry.
I have a Lemon Cupcake recipe w lemon icing that is extremely popular all around. I’ve tried substituting other citrus fruits; oranges, [also good], grapefruit, [very yummy], lime [-complete fail]. But all agree, the lemon is the bomb. I have not made them in a while, as I’m trying to slim down for swimsuit season, there is much complaining in regards to this hardship.
