Is there anything the SDMB could beat every other message board in existence at?

No, that’s where Forrest Gump was shot.

Having me as a member.

What?

I think we would take gold in the nitpicking Olympics. But that’s okay, because I like things accurate. And I can use it to my advantage when feeling lazy, too - post that something is value X, and have someone come in two posts later to give me a precise measurement.

I think that as we become more and more connected and deluged with information, it is going to become critical for everybody to have an interface to help them make sense of the electronic world, and the Straight Dope is an excellent resource for that. That service alone is worth the price of admission.

Oh, wait, I’m a member (probably lapsed) in two other boards. Okay, scratch that one off.

Interrupt ME again, featherlou. I was in the middle of pundering my response to L.O.U.N.E.

a-HEM.

“Botoxy? Cute, but I can’t see the Forrest for the twee.”

No-no-no.

Forrest was shot in Vietnam, wasn’t he?

He and Lieutenant Dan were shot by Fortune magazine in front of shrimping boats.

  • Bush-Bashing

  • Bashing Bush bashers

  • if all the message boards were sent to their own alternate universes, we sould clearly prosper and reign mercilessly over the other message boards with our diverse and useful and incredibly intelligent mix of occupations and expertise.

  • We’re better looking, as a group.

  • And we can beat them up.

Fighting Ignorance! I should hope.

I do admit to being really good at Paper, Rock, Scissors. I beat out ten Japanese people about six times in a row and eventually had to throw it. The president of my company was pretty good as well, though. I think he was able to get to four straight wins.

Smug self-assurance about how intelligent we are. No other board comes close.

Start a “what’s your IQ?” thread if you want to see a classic, three-page-long dance of bullshit.

The Pit has to be one of the best places to vent your spleen against the travesties of humanity or just have a pile on!

Try that in real life without the guys in white coats trying to get you with a dart gun or cops arresting you for jumping into a fracas with your elbows bent.

There are many political boards that could easily give us a run for the money on the Smug-o-meter, and and just on a serious note, I really don’t think most SDMB participants think we’re all that “intelligent” (quite the opposite in many scenarios). I do think we are more willing to discuss things (mostly) rationally than most other boards, and standards of evidence required for assertions in arguments are certainly higher .

Yes, Forrest. If you become a shrimping boat captain, I’ll be your first mate.

…deeper words have never been spoken.
Obviously, I need a nap. Maybe we’re good at napping. I know I am.

You do realize, of course, that there’s a difference between accuracy and precision? The statement “Pi is between 3 and 4” is perfectly accurate, but not very precise. The statement “Pi = 5.14159265358979323846” is exceedingly precise, but not very accurate at all. The statement “Pi = 1” is neither, and the statement “Pi = 3.14159265358979323846” is both.

How about writing alternative version of Lord of the Rings?

Or a “When did you learn to read?” thread.
I’d swear everyone here has an IQ over 250 and taught themself to read by the time they were 18 months old.

I learned to read at 250 months. My IQ is 18.

picking my nose

Are you threatening me? That’s it - pistols at dawn!

(We’re also pretty good at taking offense way out of proportion. )

I like things accurate AND precise. But about 0.05% more accurate than precise.
