I moved to the Chicago area for a new job 3 months ago, but made the unfortunate decision to rent an apartment in Buffalo Grove. This suburb seems to have NOTHING for a single 31-year-old man such as myself. Is my assessment accurate, or is there anything for young singles to do in these suburbs? It’s getting pretty lonely and depressing living here. The Cubs were a source of happiness, but the way they’ve been playing the last 5 games…
I have a friend who lives in nearby Kildeer, but I got nothin’. Maybe you could go for a run or a bike ride over at at Deer Grove Forest Reserve. It’s a prime spot for active people of all ages. Who knows, you could bump in to an attractive jogging-type-person or dog walker.
Purely for fun? http://www.chicagoindoorracing.com/
Otherwise the nearest nightlife will probably be in Schaumburg.
You’re in a world of hurt when Shaumburg is your glittering salvation. Ouch.
The Suburbs in general, Chicago’s and other cities, are simply a morass of misery and boredom. They are useless for people who did not grow up there or did not move there as a family with the intention of having no social life outside of day care and lawn moving.
Acquaint yourself with the Metra Lines and get your ass downtown whenever its practical.
ETA: I should add that if you are desperate that downtown Palatine has a couple bars, Lamplighters and Durty Nellies, that are mediocre. I used to love Durty Nellies but the moved to a new building and turned into a TGI Fridays clone.
Yesh, Durty Nellie’s sure ain’t what it used to be (for that matter, neither is Lamplighter…it used to be a biker bar!) But Nellie’s still has good live music, so you might want to check that out.
Listen to these people.
This is the saddest sentence I have ever read.
Thank God I (the OP) no longer live in that hellhole. I escaped on June 6, 2009. (Yes, I still remember the exact date.)
When I got to that part of the thread, my fists tightened and my stomach clenched. Schaumburg is a proven blight on the face of the Earth and can pretty much just vaporize as far as I’m concerned.
Don’t believe me? Try getting in and out of Ikea in under three hours on a weekend.
Hopefully, you’re someplace cool, Ponch8.
He’s in the city now. The suburbs can’t hurt him anymore.
I should have realized right there that this is a zombie thread. From '08.
Since I moved from Northfield to Jefferson Park, my night life and dining options have skyrocketed. I’ve also had my car stolen so YMMV
1908 or 2008?
Unfortunately, in Buffalo Grove, you can’t even go look at the buffalo. There aren’t any. There is an elk grove in Elk Grove, but no buffalo grove in Buffalo Grove.
