Is there growing scientific consensus that recycling plastic is bad for the environment?

In many of the facilities in which the mixed recycling is sorted, people do a lot of the work, but some companies are trying to use artificial intelligence to improve efficiency.

This is the case for the large sorting facility whose description I linked to just above. It has 19 automated sorting stations with optical sensors and AI integration.
