Is there "second aid"?

Being a former Boy Scout, we were always tought “First Aid” - basic emergency care until medical professionals arrived. I always wondered, is there a “second aid”? Is that what a medical doctor provides? If an MD or an EMT is the first on the scene, is it then no longer First Aid? Of is it “First” aid only because you are supposed to do it before other things, like say finishing your ice cream or stealing the guys wallet.

What’s the Straight Dope?

First aid is the immediate life-saving or condition-stabilizing actions taken by the first person to render assistance. Stopping blood loss, treating shock, splinting that broken leg, etc. Obviously called “first aid” because it’s first, regardless of who performs it. “Second aid” has no apparent meaning as a medical term.

“First Aid” preceeds medical intervention.
