What can be done for Haiti?
I feel so exasperated right now. I don’t know much about Haiti, I don’t pretend to have a handle on either its history or its current situation, and my eyes glaze over at the mere thought of even trying to master all the information necessary to make something like an intelligent comment on what’s going on down there.
But, God damn it, can Haiti really be so hopeless as it seems to be?
What exactly * is * the problem? Why do they seem to be so completely unable to establish something resembling a humane and effective government? Do Haitians really hate each other so much that their political divisions completely rule out any kind of genuine national unity? Why is the poverty so damn extreme? Are they really so completely devoid of economic potential?
Exactly what are the political divisions? Is it a tribal kind of thing?
Have they * no * economic resources of any kind? Is brutal poverty truly the only future that the average Haitian can look forward to? Is there no possibility that the average Haitian can hope to have at least a semblance adequate food, clothing, shelter and education?
What would be necessary to fix, or at least substantially alleviate, Haiti’s endless political and economic nightmare?
What is needed? What? * What??!? *
