I’m interested in visiting Tahiti and I’m disabled and use a 300 lb wheelchair to get around. I need to get from the airport to the resort, but I don’t know how I’m going to do it. Th ere are no buses, and all of the car rentals don’t have vans with a ramp. Are there no vechles on the entire island that are wheelchair accessible?
I did just a cursory google of the the terms “wheelchair accessible transportation tahiti” and came up with myriad hits. Have you done this sort of search yet?
There are real, live buses in Tahiti. Or you could call a taxi?
As did I, but none of them mentioned anything about wheelchair accessible transportation.
I just saw this. I’m not sure if the bus is wheelchair accessible plus my flight gets in at midnight, but this still may be an option. I don’t know how far a way it stops to the resort and the schedule is in French, but I’ll look into it. Thank you.
You mentioned a resort, so I assume you already know where you plan to stay. So why not call or email the resort directly to find out whether they can help with travel arrangements? (I assume you also need to know that the resort itself will be accessible. For example, would you need a walk-in shower in your room, rather than the tub that is standard in American hotels.)
This document describes the access ramps, etc., that are supposed to be on all the buses, but you are right to be concerned: if you arrive on Sunday or before dawn (which you say you are) then there may not be any lines running and you probably have no choice but to get a taxi or arrange some transportation in advance. Have you tried calling the resort directly (possibly getting a French speaker to help you) to see if they have any recommendations? Surely you cannot be the first guest with a late-arriving flight or a wheelchair, and they may have the best advice.
The resort didn’t know anything about wheelchair accessible transportation. Most people who are in wheelchairs have manual ones that don’t weigh a little and can fold up. I don’t need a walk in tub.
If the people at the resort couldn’t give you any advice about wheelchair transportation, I don’t see how we can do any better. Perhaps contact the Tahiti tourism bureau?
