Is this a good computer deal?

I know it is refurbished, but I think I’m OK with that risk. Is this a decent computer?

Thoughts?

It’s a Woot deal

I’m not sure that it’s a GREAT deal, but it’s probably worth the asking price. To be fair, I’m not a huge H-P fan. If it were a similarly configured unit from a different manufacturer, I’d be likely to say it would be a much better deal. At that price point, +/- $100 is sort of trivial. Have you actually tried a similar model (i.e., had your hands on it to get a good feel for the keyboard, display quality, etc.)?

Depends on what you want to do with it. A few things would stop me from buying it:

  • it is a 17.3" laptop. That thing will be a beast to carry around. However, if you are looking for a desktop replacement that will rarely leave home it could be a good fit for you.

  • The GPU (video) and processor are several generations old. The CPU is a 6th generation chip and they are currently selling the 8th generation. However, if you are not planning on doing any heavy gaming or video editing you should be fine.

  • The hard drive is a hybrid. That means that it has a small solid state drive (8 GB) supporting a large (1 TB) standard drive. While faster than the old standard drives, hybrids can’t hold a candle to solid state drives

  • It has a DVD drive. I can’t remember the last time I actually used one.

It’s a Woot refurb deal. Walk away.

Amazon has started to partner with them and is selling some of these from time to time. Look up some reviews on Amazon about these “deals”.

Continue walking away.

Thank you. I need a return policy that will allow me to return an item if I am unsatisfied, not only if it is broken. And I need no “restocking fee”.

I don’t know about their computers but woot’s scratch and dent refurbished cell phones are very scratch and dent. We bought a Samsung S5 or S6 for my father in law a few years ago that was quite damaged. However, it worked and a case covered most of the scratches.

I know very little about computers.

But I have bought scratch and dent/open box/refurbished stuff from good egg and everything worked fine. 3 desktops and a lap top…monitors keyboards. Etc.

I don’t play the latest games or do video editing, but BattleField2 ran just fine on a $79 tower bought 5 years ago, that was probably outa date when I got it.

VIV LA DISCOUNT BIN!!!

My current computer and my previous one were both refurbished Dell Latitudes, I paid under $150 for each of them. They are good quality machines that have served me well as my everyday driver. (I bought them from Tampa Laptops, you can always look at tmeir site and compare with woot.)

OEM refurbs are an entirely different category from Woot’s stuff.

As long as you are buying directly from the maker you should be okay. Just be aware that the chance of having to return it for a replacement/refund is a wee bit higher. And the savings are often decent from most makers.

yeah, this. pretty much every Apple device I’ve owned, I bought as a refurb direct from them. you’d be hard-pressed to tell the difference from a brand-new one (I never could.)

Started to “partner” with them? Amazon has owned Woot for some time now. And though they claimed Woot would continue to operate independently with no changes, they’ve changed so much that Woot really isn’t Woot anymore.
