Is this advertisement racist to you?

Not sure what forum this goes in, but mods, please move it if I’m wrong.

Naomi Campbell is upset at this ad, claiming that it is…racist? I guess it is supposed to suggest “chocolate” people or something. I just saw it as saying that the new cadbury stuff is “high end”.

You can see the ad here.

Is it racist?

Not racist in my opinion. Although it may be insulting to chocolate.

Good grief. I can’t imagine anyone other than her getting offended over such a thing. I think she’s just mad they called her a diva and used her name without paying her.

I have contacted Al Sharpton about this urgent matter.

Maybe the ad should be for unsweetened dark chocolate.

I don’t buy the racist claim, but I do take issue with implying Naomi Campbell is a “Diva”.
Divas have talent.

The article misquotes Naomi.

I’m sure that what she actually said was,“I’m a celebrity and I need some more attention!”

What the title of the article should have said was,“Naomi finds way to get more attention”.
Glad to help

Why would they make an ad that references Naomi Campbell? Is she still famous for anything?

Meh, frankly, I think the ad is tasteless is saying “Move over, Naomi,” and Campbell is being a tad histrionic.

Maybe it was referencing Naomi Judd instead?

Basically it’s just a bad ad. It should have said, “Move over, ladies” and then we’d not be trying to determine which if any celebrities it was insulting and anyone who claimed it was racist would be rightfully laughed out of town.

This is how I feel, too.

If you wanted I think you could argue it objectifies Campbell, or women, or black people, or something- but I don’t see the racism.

Glad to see I’m not the only one that doesn’t get the racist side of it.

I thought it was referring to Naomi Klein.

When I think “Naomi Campbell,” I do not immediately think “black.” I think “supermodel.” She really has almost nothing to do with any of the things that I associate with blackness. Not that I think about her very often in any context.

If I encountered the ad by itself, I’m not sure that I would have known for sure that it was supposed to reference her, either.

For what it’s worth, in the circles I’m familiar with, black (American) folks have been known to call themselves, and black culture, “chocolate,” with purely positive connotations (Ray Nagin was accused of racism against white people for using the term).

Hey, in Scrubs, JD calls Turk “Chocolate Bear” all the time.

I don’t think it’s racist, but I do think it’s stupid. Comparing a black woman to a chocolate bar - they didn’t think they were going to get some complaints from somewhere?

Not that I side with Campbell. I dislike her intensely.

Had Cadbury admitted it was supposed to be her they were referencing?

I think it’s called bitter chocolate.

(no, really!)
