Is this freedom?

There’s a name for that around here, my lad.

I’m amazed that ‘protests’ don’t accomplish anything. Amazed. Have you tried sewing a peace quilt or going to a teach-in?

That is called trolling, and it’s expressly forbidden on the SDMB. We ban people for that.

DON’T DO IT AGAIN.

For the Straight Dope

Go Lynn!

Before the invasion of Afghanistan, didn’t the Taliban offer to hand over OBL for trial if the USA showed them any evidence against him? If they couldn’t/wouldn’t show evidence for a trial then, what makes you think that they could produce evidence now that would convince a court, never mind world opinion?

Forget OBL for a minute, if the USA was held accountable in a court of law for their actions in Iraq, do you think they would have a hope in hell of winning their case?

Oh good grief, don’t start this. Maybe if the Taliban were the legitimate government of the Afghans, we’d probably take it into account, but because their intolerant soul destroying reputation got in the way, we blew them straight to hell, and made the average Afghans life alot easier than it was four years ago.

Yes. We did. Thats one thing I’m not sorry President Bush did.

No, we told the Taliban to hand over OBL or else. They chose or else.

Oh, the irony!

Ryan, you and I arrived at SDMB at about the same time. Your posts two years ago were more intelligent because you were willing to ask questions about things you didn’t understand.

Being bullied by a virtually unarmed teenager in the pit is a little like being stoned with popcorn.

Why not ease off or, if something is really bugging you, talk about it like you used to where you won’t stir up so much hostility?

Actually treaties do exist , countries that have existing treatys regarding extradition. However of late , some of those nations have been adding riders that the death penalty cannot be levied against the deported soul.

For the most part , given enough evidence , most nations will arrest , detain ,and deport citizens for just cause. Other nations ,that love to give the finger to the states by hosting such paragons of virtue, are the ones that are concidered free game , to basically abduct abdul and bring him to justice.

While its possible that allied and freindly nations may also fall under this sanction , do to their humanitarian stance on the DP, I would think that its a last resort ,rather than a first resort.

I would wonder as well, if the agency still does covert snatch jobs. It would be easier to frag the order to a seal team.

Declan

And you still didn’t get him.

Why in fact, when I consult the almanac: Osama Bin Laden is still free! Call that value for money? 'Cause I don’t.

How about prudent management of the national treasury?

You’re the Guru: How long has it been now since the man the US went to war over jigged his merry way into Pakistan?

Come on then, Brutus. Stop being a coward. Do you support the policy we’re discussing? If so, can you explain it intelligently? If not, how are you protesting it?

And what about the rest of you? Bricker, Shodan, Sam Stone, somebody?

Are you still asking only Bush supporters?

I’m not all that amazed.
The American political landscape has become one of stark futility, to some Americans at least.
So, I’ll throw down a gauntlet: you come up with an effective non-protest based strategy designed to secure our civil liberties, and I’ll get on board. Sound good?

As for teach-in’s, I think that’s a bit before my time; I don’t know what they are/were.
I’m tempted to take your deragotory remark seriously and talk about education and politics, but I think I’ll wait to see how you respond.

You’re right, and boy do I hate that. Of course I meant untermensch…

We, of course, are the Ubermensch.

And then after that got boring, Bush decided that finding ObL wasn’t so important after all.

Sorry to Nitpick, Zoe, but he never said as much to me.

Of course. Our military needs broad new powers to deal with its broad new tasks. After all, you guys nuetered the CIA, which should be the lead agency in dealing with international terrorists, but since they can’t find their asses with both hands and a Congressional oversight committee, it’s up to the military.

Back in the day, the CIA pulled off some great operations, like Project Phoenix. Well, people like you flipped-out and you ran your swords through that agency, so now we all have to deal with the consequences of institutionalized ineffectiveness at the CIA for some years to come. And part of those consequences means giving the military new powers if they are going to be the go-to group in fighting terrorism. (And certainly these powers are needed, given the nature of Islamist terrorism.)

Probably not.

I am forming a bongo-circle down by the campus, and we’ll make some music and raise awareness, man! (Emergency backup plan: Sit-in at the Dean’s office!)

Heh, mebe they got snatched up by the Army.

But you claim to be ‘discussing’ this policy. I see awful little ‘discussion’, and a lot of ‘OMG BUSH IS TEH TIE-RANT!’ and piling onto to certain posters, but not much discussion. When you act like a pit of shrieking, poop-flinging monkeys, don’t be suprised if not too many people want to stop by.

I think what Brutus is suggesting is that you pick up a rifle and shoot Bush’s head off his rump.

It is, however doubtfull if this will be effective.
Better shoot Rummy and Wolfowitz et al.

Yeah, man, those were the days! You also shouldn’t forget the assasination of Mossadeq in Iran, the, y’know, democratically elected leader of that country, to be replaced by the US Puppet Shah who tortured and killed so many of his people that the general public supported the rise of the uber-tolerant Ayatollahs? How about the covert support of a coup by military leaders in Chile, toppling the democratically elected leader Salvador Allende, and the open support of Pinochet, who tortured and killed thousands of his own people who dissented? Or the Bay of Pigs! Man, that was sweet the way we sent those Cuba irregulars in to get slaughtered on the beach by Castro 'cause the CIA kinda forgot to get permission from the civilian government to topple the regime in Cuba and had their air support pulled. Boy, those were some flawless operations that ran so well and with so little blowback that I can’t imagine why the CIA was required to have some oversight.

Maybe because they were a bunch of cowboys drunk on power and so convinced of their own moral correctness in the fight against Communism and the American Way of Life ™ that they couldn’t possibly be in error? And maybe because it was a compromise deal thought up by bigshots in power, who should have been sent to prison rather than simply defanged?

Thanks for the broad brush strokes. Did you actually read the thread, or just take what you wanted from it?

Oh, and BTW - what the hell else do you expect in the pit? Rational discourse? Take it to GD if you want a civilized discussion. You’ve been here way longer than I have, you should know better…

Yes, says me, I don’t see how my imput is any less of Aldebarans just because I live in Europe and England. If that applies to me, it applies to you and him as well.

Fine. But I don’t see why I should be branded a racist because I ask questions most people don’t have the balls to ask. Ok, my wording on that Muslim thread might of been off putting, but its just emotion, nothing else.

Though I support the Cuban revolution, they communists were hardly the innocents being abused by a large imperialist power, the Soviets were happy to do that themselves.

What I was getting at is in the majority of posts made by Aldebaran, he comes across as some self styled expert on the American administration and of the Muslim world and the EU, what he doesn’t know is that he’s probably the most arrogant person on the boards at the moment in regards to talking about Iraq and US polices at home and abroad. He talks about how the US is some imperialist blood thirsty hateful empire hell bent on enslaving the entire world to its interests, and gives special devotion to how ‘oppressed’ the Arabs are to their heel. he tries to abdicate all guilt and shove it onto an easy and identifiable target, Bush and the US.
and I just noticed, my mind shifts from one thing to another, from the post Zoe made to how much I hate Aldebaran, to doing a slight hijacking of the thread, anyway enjoy.
