Is this LG blu-ray player likely to be any good?

Unless you buy a specialty set of some show that is not AVAILABLE on regular DVD, and don’t realize it until you give it to the recipient and the package has been opened. :::cough::: not that I would ever do anything that dumb… :::cough:::.

However, except for the access to internet-based stuff, I would generally agree, not worth bothering with blu-ray at this point until you can upgrade the TV.

There are a few titles, including one of my favorite movies of all time, that are available on Blu-ray but not on DVD.

I can believe it. I did indeed buy Typo Knig the Family Guy Star Wars collection last year, only to find out too late that it was Blu-Ray format. :smack:

We’re planning on remedying it this Christmas ourselves which is why I read the thread to begin with.

It means being proactive. Buying a VCR wouldn’t be future-proofing anything, since the future is filled with flying cars, jetpacks and bluray players that aren’t compatible with VHS tapes.

Oooh - one thing to think of, is what instant video it has access to. I was hoping to find one that would let us access both Netflix and Amazon instant video. When I narrowed them down at Amazon, there were only about 4 models. And only one of those had built-in wi-fi.

I think the one you mention only has one of the two instant services (probably Netflix but I could be misremembering). Whether it’s a priority for you or not, it’s something to consider.

Well, we use Netflix primarily, though we can already do that with our TiVo on the main TV. This would allow us to do that in the bedroom (if, in fact, we can’t connect it to the main TV). I’ve never actually used Amazon for streaming video.

The player you are looking at has composite (!) and component outputs, so you will be able to use it in the livingroom if you want to.

Sorry I nodded off for a bit. By “future proofing” I meant making sure your collection seems worth having in the indefinite future. I regret the money I spent on vhs movies after dvd came out. (Sometimes for the ridiculous reason that they were priced lower.) Made sense at the time with my wee tv, but they collected dust for a long time before I jettisoned them. Now I have much.the same experience with my accumulated dvds. Some things I don’t mind too much, but there is a lot of stuff I can’t bring myself to watch on dvd anymore because it looks a bit crap when you become used to a hi-def picture.
