Have not turned on the fountain in the garden for at least two weeks. I noticed lots of tiny worm like thingies flapin around in the water. They are about 1/4" long, and 1/100 thick with a tiny dot for a head.
TIA,
Steve
Sounds like em. Flapin, etc.
I saw some swimmin’ in a puddle about 200 meteres from my tent(the one that I lived in for four months) so I treated them to a nice bleach bath and watched until they flipped their last flap, feeling no remorse whatsoever. Not that I am an advocate of the death sentence but I felt particularily proud that day.
I’m proud of ya too, WB.
Considering that mosquitoes were only recently introduced to Hawaii(where I was living), I saw no harm in helping return it to it’s original state of grace.
If they looked like these things, they were mosquito lavae - although the ones I saw were much darker. I let them grow in my rain barrel and pond; must have raised thousands of 'em this summer (they make excellent fish food, too bad they’re not here year-round) Only got bit a couple times too!
There’s an easier, safer and more satisfyingly cruel way to kill mosquito larvae in a contained volume of water:
You might have noticed that the larvae seem to settle so that they are resting with their tails touching the surface of the water, you might also have noticed that this causes a little dimple in the water’s surface, this is how the (air-breathing) larvae breathe.
If you add a teaspoon of olive oil to the water, it forms a thin layer across the surface that they can’t penetrate with their snorkels and they suffocate.
It might also affect dissolved oxygen levels in the water, so best not to do this in a fish pond, but in a fish pond there’s no action required as the larvae provide a food source for the fish anyway.
