Is this new advertising?

The last three days I have gotten the Klez-H worm from three different email addresses. My virus protector caught them all but today I get a advertisement for a program that removes the damage Klez can cause my computer.

Needless to say I am VERY suspicious about these guys… considering I haven’t been plagued with Klez this much for a long time then THREE times in as many days and on the fourth day someone comes along to “help” me fix any problems I might have with the very same worm.

I sell things online therefore I am always getting emails in my private email from people I don’t immediately recognize and these looked just like a normal email some even said “Have a Merry christmas” in the subject line so I open them. Thus far these clowns have only been using an old worm but what if they start using a new version one that my AVG doesn’t know yet?

So I was wondering whether this is a new advertising strategy or just the luck of the draw?

Its simple:

Rule no 1: Don’t open attachments from people you don’t know

Rule no 2: Don’t open attanchments from people you DO know

Rule no 3: Ditch Outlook.

Rule no 4: Update your virus scanner weekly.

Whether you know the sender or not is irrelevant. And the most effective virus prevention device is completely free and located between your ears. All these years I have used Outlook Express and never had antivirus software and have not been infected even once. I plan to continue doing the same and I feel quite safe.

Amen. At most, I sometimes visit www.antivirus.com and run their little freebie scan. Not once in many years have I had a virus.

Even better virus protection: Don’t use windows to read mail. I guess I am lucky since my mail comes to a Linux machine and I read it there. I guess I might some day have to worry about a Linux virus, but not so far. My wife has caught viruses from customers. But there is no way she can do business without accepting files from them.

I think the replies are missing the point of the OP, or just going slightly off-topic.

I think darren is asking whether the company that is now spamming him to sell an anti-virus app is the same one who is actually sending him all of the recent viri in the firsts place.

Sounds very suspicious, and I wouldn’t put it past anyone. Kinda like an online shill…, well not really, but you get the drift.

Next you might see debt collectors selling services to avoid debt collection harassment. Seedy, but clever.

I don’t use Outlook I have Pegasus for email AND I didn’t open the attachments but I still got the red screen AVG uses to let me know watch out and it told me there were attachments that were infected and that they were Klez-H worm.

But vertigo is correct…I already know what to do about viruses and their like. I was wondering whether this was a ploy to convince me I needed those guys’ services or it was coincidental that all of these things happened within days of each other.

Just checking in here to see if others have had the same thing happen to them or can I dismiss this as a random occurrence.

Personally I think the threat of computer viruses (virii?) is greatly exaggerated. I have used a Microsoft (DOS & Windows) based OS for at least 15 years. I started out cruising the BBS’s and other dialup resources with DOS 3.?? and am now using XP with a broadband connection. More often than not I have done this with NO anti-virus software installed. I frequent IRC, the web, and newsgroups. Download anything that strikes my fancy at the time, read ALL my e-mail and have NEVER been infected with a virus.

Maybe I’m just one of the lucky ones.

Klez sends out a variety of fake messages to get you to open its attachment, including fake advertisements for software that removes Klez! Beware.

And I just re-read Darren and Vertigo’s posts and realize I am completely off-topic.

Happy Holidays everyone

Grit I’ve been online a few years and so far I’ve gotten about 15 viruses, worms, and trojans. One bad period I hadn’t updated my protection for a month I got two viruses and one worm in a week.

After that I don’t have such trouble remembering to update my protection.

ONE virus is all it will take to make YOU a believer also.
